So I'm about 5 weeks into a graduate entry medical degree and the level of information overload is pretty high. Obviously as part of my previous degree (BioMed Sci) there was a lot to cover but no one's life depended on me getting the answer correct and things were more correlated to each other, with this course it jumps around. For instance 2 weeks ago I was learning the anatomy and physiology of the ear, this week I'm learning about menstruation and menopause, not much crosses over...

Do any of highly intelligent ladies and gentlemen have any strategies for remembering large amounts of information?

Well that's a random 3rd post! Welcome back, I'm sure we have a few scholarly personages that may be able to help you.

Despite the Dr in my username, I went into Physics entirely so I could get away with remembering as little as possible. I would love to know the answer to this too.

My only other tip is by moleskine notebooks, and then never write in anything else under any circumstances. Yeah, their poncy £10 things, but they are built to last and I know that every scrap I wrote throughout my PhD is somewhere on that bookshelf.

Well, aside from "be young" and "have a naturally good memory" I can't help.
If you know why stuff is, it usually helps too.

Haha, yeah I suppose it is, I found this forum through MaliA and decided this forum might be a bit more helpful than the one I met him on.

Various ever-so-clever types recommend using association and linking numbers to scenarios or words to other words and so on and so forth. I have found that this works, but is a bloody pain in the arse and takes effort. You can really learn a whole bundle of stuff using it though. I think the Derren Brown book has a few good ways. I think that's more for learning specific sequences more than general knowledge, but could be useful for if you need to remember lists or specific short routines.

The memory trick with associating places on a route you travel often with various things is also good, and very similar. If interested look 'em up or something, as I'd be terrible at describing them.

:)

The only way I can remember stuff is by being interested in it, so I remember all sorts of "useless" stuff & next to nothing of any use :DD

This.

For my degree (which was taught really fucking badly) I learned everything by teaching it to my mate (who was on for a 3rd but ended up 2:2ing it) and then broke everything down to mnemonics and as soon as I got in the hall I wrote the mnemomomoisx down on the exam paper and then wrote as fast as possible.

One thing: writing for three hours is really unnatural when all you do is type.
