Be Excellent To Each Other

Thought it'd be nice to have a thread where we could post links or images or little tributes to photographers and photographs out there that we really like - or even go on rants against those we really think over-rated. (Martin Parr, I'm looking at you.) This way we can see true awesome without feeling guilty for dropping it in the Pics Wot I Took thread.

I've got this months BJP in, and it has some good stuff. Zardoz, I can assure you that aside from the (tastefully captured, I assure you) nether-regions of a Japanese lady being approached by an iguana there's no real nudity. Apart from on the letters page, where they've printed another photo of naked man and his clackers on piano in response to a letter complaining about it. So avoid that one. But yes, good stuff again in BJP. Certainly better than Amateur Photographer, which recycles the same bloody articles and keeps having 'we edit your pics' showcases which frequently ruin the off-kilter charm of the original. Idiots.

Where was I? Oh yeah, 'good stuff'. This link is from one I got in BJP and it contains a nice little photo journal of a trucker's life, and another little project called 'Pillow Talk'. Worth checking out...

Another great photographer is Suzanne Opton. Check out her 'Vermont' section for some eye-popping old B&W shots of rural Vermont. The two brothers who look like hill-billy Isaac Asmiovs. The man snoozing next to the fainly monstrous Christmas tree that towers over him in his cabin, looking like some ghastly parasite. The old scowling fellow with the shotgun in front of his dilapidated shack, on high over the photographer harshly lit in the bright sunlight. Great stuff.

There's a gentleman on Flickr who took part in one of those 365 day self-portrait things. he completed one and started a second.

Photography skill aside, the subject, being his own face and a few props, is just so engaging.

OK, so partly the appeal is the beard. And that he is quite obviously Father Christmas.

Anybody a fan of Michael Ormerod? He did a photobook called 'States of America' which detailed the emptiness and ebbing self-confidence of America. Full of desolate highway landscapes with signs advertising the great new frontiers of capitalism and opportunity beside deserted petrol stations, rusted car hulks and forgotten communities. There's some stunning stuff in there. A lot of bright light / high contrast shots of street corners with dusty barber shop windows, or dark and menacing grainy and fuzzy B&W visions of drive-in theatres in the middle of nowhere, a flickering screen in the distance before a barren range of Nevada hills.

His most famous picture is one of a girl blowing bubblegum on the side of a highway. She's
tanned and seems almost asleep. The bubble bubbling from her mouth looks about to pop as a car approaches, headlights glistening on the rain-slicked macadam. The sky is weighted and bruised and in the distance the incomprehensible neon signs of a waystation fizzle. For many its his greatest shot. Ormerod died in 1993, somewhat ironically in a road accident on a stretch of highway that - going by his photographs - remained ever empty and devoid of obstacles or distractions.

Btw, Craster. I feckin' love Ansel Adams. I have a book of his colour works too. Breathtaking. Feels like you're going to fall into his landscapes. Real vertigo stuff. No one matches him for detail and depth of field, either.

I am now. That last one is bloody brilliant.

I don't know that I love this picture I found it on Flickr when looking on the map, it's of a house round the corner taken forty years ago:



I just find it incredibly creepy and unsettling, it also reminds me of that famous painting of the American farming couple.

Wow, that's pretty odd. They look stuck on.

I am genuinely creeped out by that picture. I think it is the lightshade behind them that makes it (really) odd.

That photo is fantastic MarkG. It is really eerie. It reminds me of the ending of Sapphire & Steel! Only with Rosemary and Fred West types.

I can't seem to escape the bloody thing, for some reason that picture is following me round the internet, it was mildly interesting the first time but after the 400th it's just annoying.

If you go through his stream (including being the Betty Ford Funeral photographer on behalf of the family) you will see just how good he is. He has explained that he has Aspergers so once he starts editing a photo he forgets to do things like eat sleep or pay the rent until it is perfect.
