At the end of the last MAME challenge there were a few people who suggested they would like to take part in a challenge specifically around Shoot em ups.

This would allow you to play stuff like Do-don-patchi / anything else by Treasure / or more sedate stuff like R-Type or Scramble :-)
This is just a poll to gauge interest , as some of the other challenges have really struggled with the numbers. - Enough people said yes so now time to nominate

Plan would be to have a 2 nominations each - a vote on the games - and run it for 5 or 6 weeks in total

If your interested vote in the panel above - if you think you have suggestions for great games then you can stick them below and i'll try to compile them - if the season goes ahead i'll put a zip file on here with the games and MAME so you just download and double click to play them.

If we dont end up with at least 4 or 5 people who will actually play each week then we'll wait.

I'll also come clean now and say that i'm not particularly good a shoot'em'ups so you dont need to worry too much about me winning this (unless I'm the only person who takes part :-)

Some examples of games to give you ideas

Cyvern

Ikaruga

Radient Silvergun

ESP Ra.De.

Dangun Feveron

Blazing Star

Space Invaders

Space Bomber

Okay we seem to have enough people interested- time to nominate -

I intend leaving the nominations open till the end of Tuesday - then voting until Sunday / and Start on Monday the 27th
Games would run for 1 week

Nominations so far :

Parodius Da!
Fantasy Zone
Raiden
Space Bomber
Radiant Silvergun
Space Invaders
Dangun Feveron
Blazing Star
Cyvern
DoDonPachi
R-Type -
Gradius
Slap Fight
Star Force
Darius Gaiden
Progear
Armed Police Batrider
Scramble
Esp Ra. De
R-Type Leo
Truxton

Hopeless at shooters too, but I'm in. I promise not to nominate Out Zone again.

Sign me up!

Everybody's rubbish at shmups, really, but avoiding them on that basis is a bit like saying "I won't learn to play guitar - I'm crap at it". They are The Best Games, and they're usually lots of fun even if you're doing badly, so everybody should join in!

I'd like to nominate Dangun Feveron and Blazing Star. Both absolutely top-notch. I haven't spent anywhere near as much time with them as I'd like to...

I'm in and would love to nominate Radiant Silvergun (If everyone can get it to run)

And of course, I wouldn't want a shoot em up challenge without the original Space Invaders!

It's probably the only MAME challenge I'd stick at (mostly hate platformers), so aye.

I'm intending to nominate Space Bomber for gibberish purposes & because everyone loves it even if they don't know it yet.

Do you not have one lying around from an old console you could just get a converter for ?

Otherwise a cheap wired Xbox360 pad would be fine (needs to be wired otherwise you need the wireless adaptor which would cost more but allow you to use your normal 360 pads on it).

Normally I'd say just use the keyboard but a lot of shooters need you to hammer the firebutton a lot :-)

I tend to have problems using the D-pad for shootemups, that's all.

I too much prefer using a stick for shooters.. You can get a game pad with a stick off eBay for around £20.

Didn't up to jump have a review of one on there? I seem to remember it reading very well!

You'll mean this : http://uptojump.co.uk/?p=1237

Remember the 360pad does have the twin analog sticks so you can use them - although I agree if you have the choice you'll want a 'real' stick.

Count me as definitely in for this one! More time at home nowadays baby to be playing these things, plus I do rather like shmups, even if I am rubbish at them.

Not really played any Cave shooters so I imagine I'll be as good at it as all the others (not very). Fine with me though. I may nominate something a bit older like Phoenix or Satan's Hollow if I can't think of anything else.

Espgaluda and Mushihimesama aren't playable in MAME, guys. I have the PS2 ports, but I don't think we can count on everybody buying those, much less the original boards. :p

PS - Ibara's brilliant, but it's very much a Raizing game at heart. It's a lot closer to Battle Garegga than DoDonPachi. It's not playable in MAME, though.

Okay - to confirm - these games *must* work in MAME - I will check that they 'work' as in load / and that at least the start of the game is okay but you should make sure they are playable.

I've only ever played Espgaluda in Mame (and on the iPad recently, I guess). It was in the MAME challenge, I though.

Maybe you're thinking of ESP Ra.De., Grim...? It's the first game in that series, and definitely works in MAME.

Yeah, I was just assuming they worked. I've got a modded PS2 at home with DoDonPachi, Ibara and Mushihimesama on that - never tried any of them through MAME before.

And i've rediscovered my love for bodyboard, so i've surfing at weekends.

BTW, i nominate any every Cave game, and also Saint Dragon because i remember it being awesome on the amiga.

I'm using MAME320.104U1
