Just saw the feature on the dashboard.
This is looking pretty good.
20 years after a nuke in moscow, roaming the metro in a FPS.

Yes, cautious optimism also. It's a shooter though so a good story and all the atmosphere in the world won't save it if the shooting's no fun.

Another FPS? Fuck's sake. Why can't it be a first person travelling-on-trains-and-redecorating sim? Finding cans of paint and polyfiller and slowly returning the Metro back to its original state before all your teeth and skin fall out/off from radiation.

How is this not a free newspaper simulator? There's a fucking great big hole in the market there, and you can't do much worse than that Russian dude who took over the whatsit London thingy.

I'm certainly interested in this as there is a certain STALKER vibe to it, and I bloody loved that game for all it's very many faults.

I liked the see through clip in the gun.

Tells me nothing about the game, that, though.

Quote:
The year is 2033. The world has been reduced to rubble. Humanity is nearly extinct. The half-destroyed cities have become uninhabitable through radiation. Beyond their boundaries, they say, lie endless burned-out deserts and the remains of splintered forests. Survivors still remember the past greatness of humankind. But the last remains of civilisation have already become a distant memory, the stuff of myth and legend. More than 20 years have passed since the last plane took off from the earth. Rusted railways lead into emptiness. The ether is void and the airwaves echo to a soulless howling where previously the frequencies were full of news from Tokyo, New York, Buenos Aires. Man has handed over stewardship of the earth to new life-forms. Mutated by radiation, they are better adapted to the new world. Man's time is over. A few score thousand survivors live on, not knowing whether they are the only ones left on earth. They live in the Moscow Metro - the biggest air-raid shelter ever built. It is humanity's last refuge. Stations have become mini-statelets, their people uniting around ideas, religions, water-filters - or the simple need to repulse an enemy incursion. It is a world without a tomorrow, with no room for dreams, plans, hopes. Feelings have given way to instinct - the most important of which is survival. Survival at any price. VDNKh is the northernmost inhabited station on its line. It was one of the Metro's best stations and still remains secure. But now a new and terrible threat has appeared. Artyom, a young man living in VDNKh, is given the task of penetrating to the heart of the Metro, to the legendary Polis, to alert everyone to the awful danger and to get help. He holds the future of his native station in his hands, the whole Metro - and maybe the whole of humanity.

This is the blurb of the book off amazon.

Hellgate London, anyone?

Indeed, that's what it sounds like. Hellgate London, mashed in with Stalker, mashed in with the best part of Fallout 3: endless metro tunnels full of mutants!

But think, is Russian game, will have relentlessly oppressive, depressing atmosphere. Will wish was dead after playing, even though world not asplode yet! Is sad.

Hellgate: London looked awesome while it was in development and was one of the first games I bought after building my PC. Turns out it was utter pap.

Perhaps this is a stupid question, but how do people in these post apocalyptic stories survive? Where do they get their food?

Fallout 3 had people still surviving on 200 year old TV dinners... there must have been a HELL of a lot of TV dinners for there still to be some left 200 years later.

But think of The Terminator. When Reese goes into the refuge and it's full of people, there's someone stabbing rats but rats survive on eating human garbage so that wouldn't really work, and certainly there's no sign of where the enormous Resistance army is getting all its food and uniforms and stuff from.

And now this (and indeed, Hellgate London)... if you live in a subway tunnel, where does your food come from? And if you say 'hydroponics', where does your power come from?

The Road spoilers:

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
Almost everyone The Man and His Boy (two bad neighbours) encounter in The Road are cannibals, who enslave people and use them for food. Um? To stop your 'food' dying and going bad, surely you have to feed them! And what do you feed them on? Your other 'food'? And you'd better feed them, otherwise there'll be little or no meat to be had from them. So you must feeding them something else! So why not just eat that something else instead? And what were those 'food' people eating before you captured them?

Is that the film? The book goes into great detail about finding food.

It's in the book too.

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
They hide from several groups of 'raiders' with slaves who are being kept to be eaten later. Indeed, he uses one of the precious two bullets shooting that guy who's travelling in the truck. And then later they stumble into a basement that's been converted into a dungeon, and is filled with dozens of naked people being kept for food.

So while the Ban and his Moy are content eating canned goods they find, everyone else wants long pig.

I got this, having been quite curious about it. I'll let you know what I think after I've played it a bit. Interesting so far at least.

I also obtained this recently. I've played it a bit aaaand... Well. Hmm.

It seems okay. I agree with Rossignol's Eurogaymer review, mostly. It /has/ made me jump and squeal like a girl a few times. But then so has Ben 10.

What's the music used in the trailer on the website? And what film was it in?

I've completed a playthrough on this and it's your basic spooky FPS played mostly by torchlight. There's a lot of them out there now.

Anyway, the Fallout-esque atmosphere is convincing enough (voice acting is a bit sketchy) and having to change air filters isn't the chore you'd expect.

Better than Condemned, not as good as The Darkness.

I still need to go back to this, I'm about halfway through at present. So much to do, so little time.

That's backward of "Grim...'s list of games he liked".
Condemned was one of the first games I had though, so maybe I gave it more time than it deserved.

To be fair my opinion is probably more biased on account of Condemned having some really horrible achievements!

So, 've put this to one side to play Assassins Creed 2. For one reason.

I mean it looks great, it's really atmospheric, and the story is quite interesting. You'll be crawling around a subway tunnel, and it all be dark and scary and you'll pull your gasmask over your face and it will be all claustrophobic and awesome, and then a scary thing will come out the darkness at you and you'll shoot it — but at no point will it flinch and react. It will just carry on unneffected till (I guess) it's hit points run out, at which point it will fall over.

It destroys any sense of reality to the game, and destroys the entertaining 'lack of ammo' gimmick.

One tiny little thing, and it ruins the game.
