Software developer for the same company I'm working for now. Started in The Hague, worked out of Kent, then to Texas for a while, now back in Kent.

My Dutch doesn't really exist. I tried when I first got there, but people laughed at me and answered in English, so I gave up. (Sometimes people would talk to me in English before I'd even opened my mouth. I guess I must look British, despite keeping my top on and not having any bulldog tattoos.) I've forgotten pretty much all I knew since then. Except I still sometimes add -je to the end of words to indicate smallness.

I only actually met one person in my time there who didn't speak English, but I had a Dutch person with me then.

You might be able to get away with that for Splott, but not for Ely - or Caerau depending on which side of the Cowbridge Rd you live. Technically I think it's called Caerau, but esoteric Welsh name aside it's still a rundown grotty 50s housing estate.

I really do like moving. Get a bit bored of the places I move to, usually, but being somewhere new is oh so good.

A very strange place. In the 80s and 90s you would be lucky to get out without being stabbed or robbed by a crackhead, yet in the early noughties they managed to kick all of the scum into Surrey and house prices rocketted.

They've done the same in Battersea and are right in the process of doing it in Wandsworth. Seems that all they want now are London postal codes to be worth a fortune but are not thinking about the impact it is having on the areas they are forcing the shitbags into.

Here is an example of such activity. Mitcham is a dump and always was, yet it was always quite safe (barring a couple of pikey sites you avoided). However in 1999 they closed down a massive council estate in Wandsworth and shoved every one on it into what used to be Phipps Bridge in Mitcham. Here is the result of that.

IIRC they were responsible for about five murders. Some proven, some not. I do know that they robbed my mum's friend at gunpoint mistaking her for the drug dealer that lived about three doors down.

Mitcham is fucking miles from Battersea, but TZ were all exhiled from Wandsworth originally.

Tiger bay is/was everything south of Butetown and fuck all to do with Caerau or Splott, surely?

I believe Ely and Caerau were two discreet entities at one point, Ely being founded by a bunch of resettling monks who came from... Ely in cambridgeshire. The church rears its ugly head again when looking at the name of Splott - it was what we'd call a glebe up in Lincolnshire - church land, or "God's plot" from whence Splott came. Having done tenancy support in Ely/Caerau and Splott equally, I'd say there's not much in it quality of life-wise, other than Ely is a little more remote whereas you can walk into town from Splott which causes the former to be left out of things due to the lack of mobility in the population.
