Be Excellent To Each Other

Zoolander is possibly one of the three stupidest films of all time. I know it is inherently rubbish, but for some reason I seem drawn to watch it every time it is on TV. As such I have seen it about fifteen times, and despite the fact that I think it is utterly stupid, I seem to find myself owning it on DVD. Why does this happen?

I feel the same about The Running Man.

Because Zoolander is incredibly funny?

I think it's a combination of Ben's silly voice, and Owen's silly nose. It's also pretty good.

I like the bit where they go into disguise. Also the fountain in the end sequence. Plus the random appearances of people like Bowie. I'm glad I'm not the only person who finds it so entertaining.

The Running Man is amazing, though.

Zoolander is one of the greatest film comedies of all time. Massively under-rated, despite it being released at the height of Stiller's fame.

When I first saw it, it was on a DVD. I watched it in the front room of the house I was sharing with six other people at the time and it was the only film up until that point that we had all really, really enjoyed.

And then we watched Josie and the Pussycats, and that is even better. It is my Happy Film.

I should perhaps watch that right now in fact.

There's only one laugh out loud moment in the entire film (when the male models are playfully squirting each other with petrol and the obvious result)

Not a patch on Mystery Men or Meet the Parents.

Though to be honest Ben Stiller is always better at bit parts and cameos. He's awesome as the evil nursing home dude in Happy Gilmore.

The bit with the petrol pumps near the start is superb, and if the movie basically ended there then it'd be one of the finest long skits I've ever seen. Unfortunately, there's about an hour and a half of beating the joke into the ground, stamping on it, and then rolling over it a few times. I think. Only seen it once though, and that was in the company of a twat I used to know who seriously thinks Dodgeball is the funniest thing ever, bar none, in all filmic history.

Happy Gilmore is a glorious film. As is Dodgeball (*glowers at CUS*).

Yeah, a movie so good that the ending was refused by the studio, forcing them to literally wheel on a deux ex machina instead. And not in a funny way.

I do quite like Happy Gilmore. Particularly when he fights the crocodile.

I stopped watching it after the petrol scene, so it was one of the finest long skits I've ever seen.

Dodgeball is a quite annoying film. I want it to be really funny, it sometimes is really funny, but I find the whole thing completely ruined by Ben Stiller overacting like a mo-fo and the terrible, terrible hackneyed plot. It does exactly what you expect, just a bit wackier.

I've tneded to think that Dodgeball, Zoolander and all thapt spate of comedies that appeared aren't as funny as they think they are. Of course, the exception to to this is the awesome, awesome Anchorman.

The Running Man is one of my real guilty pleasures. And not many films can claim to have an opening sequence ripped off to form an entirely new movie.

The book is amazing, the film is utter bollocks. It bears no resemblence whatsoever.

I thought it pretty good, the book , but I preferred the other Richard Bachman books at that point. Especially 'The Long Walk'. That proper messed with my head, when I was 9 or 10. Did you know that 'Rage' did in fact inspire a real-life classroom shooting?

The Bachman Books are some of my favourite writing ever. I generally can't stand King, but those four are excellent.

They are indeed, the Long Walk is the most bizzare thing ever, but I love it.

I like Zoolander (esp the petrol thing), and very much like Dodgeball, for being silly fun entertainment. Throwng wrenches at people, and someone being killed by three tons of irony, is excellent for making me laugh.

I've just finished watching Idiocracy for the first time, it's great. If disturbing.

I liked Idiocracy. Loads of other modern-day, 'stupid' comedies, too, like Harold & Kumar..., Anchorman, the Judd Apatow movies like 40 Year Old Virgin, Knocked Up, Forgetting Sarah Marshall...

I found Anchorman enjoyable, but I don't think I really 'got' it. The bit with the dog and the bear - what the fuck?
I want to see the basketball one he's in, though.

Meh, Semi-Pro isn't that good, and that's coming from someone who enjoyed Anchorman, Zoolander and Dodgeball. And The Running Man.

If you like stupid, unpretentious comedies that are quite surreal and silly, then I strongly recommend Hot Rod. I laughed quite hard at that. Came out last year, might have been straight to video. S'good though! It has Will Arnett (Gob from Arrested Development), and IAN MCSHANE in post-Deadwood awesomeness.

Watched it on a friends recommendation, turned it off after 20 mins.

It's not even slightly like Napoleon Dynamite. It has the same basic plot as Dodgeball in fact, but with jokes and not just Ben Stiller gurning. The main character does have frizzy brown hair though, so I can see why you might have thought that.

I was completely stony-faced watching Anchorman until he started talking to his dog ("Oh, Baxter. You're so wise. You're like a miniature Buddha, covered in hair"), from which point I was laughing like an idiot for the rest of the film. I can totally understand why it just doesn't click with some people.

Yeah, I watched the first 15 mins once or twice before stopping it and then coming back later to try again. Once it clicked, I was howling with laughter. "I'm gonna punch you in the ovary, that's what I'm gonna do. A straight shot. Right to the babymaker."

It is Brick Tamland who is by far the best character. It was kind of like watching the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie, where Johnny Depp just had to hove into view on screen and you knew it was going to be funny.

CUS, have you heard of Pauly Shore? etc.



Dodgeball is far more fun than those other movies.

Idiocracy is completely brilliant.

Everyone should watch it and everyone should love it. If you don't, watch it again, but watch it better.

I strongly doubt that you've seen those other movies, Curiosity. Dodgeball more fun than Harold & Kumar? OMFG LOL WTF.

I've not seen Harold & Kumar, but I have seen '40 Year Old Virgin' and 'Knocked Up'.

Dodgeball was far more fun than either of those, both of which I actually enjoyed. I mean, come on, Dodgeball had a pirate AND David Hasselhoff screaming in German. There can be no greater fun!

Aha - the latter two are Judd Appatow-associated stupid-comedy-for-grownups. H&K however, is completely different. Run, do not walk, to the video shop and rent Harold & Kumar Get The Munchies (or to give it it's non-retarded original US title, 'Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle).

I like my films to not read like someone has gone 'Right, who is cool and prevalent in internet memes... ah, Hoff, Shatner, Norris - let's give them all walk-on parts so that our shitty movie benefits from a bit of stunt casting. Especially since we already know that the ending sucks.'

Obviously, the Spongebob Squarepants movie is exempt from this rule, being not shitty, and having the best role off the Hoff's life.

I'm looking forward to the next Ben Stiller movie though, Tropic Thunder. Stuff I've read makes it sound splendidly funny.

I think Ben Stiller has made me smirk once or twice. I generally hate him.

If Zoolander has him and Owen Wilson in it, it could only get worse for me if it was presented in spoooooooooky vision with Nicolas Cage's face at all four corners of the screen.

I find Nicolas Cage much more watchable now I've realised that he always looks like he's trying to decide whether or not the last fart he did had some poo in it.

Every facial expression he does includes "I wonder if I just shat myself? I hope not. Maybe I didn't. It's probably only a tiny bit if I did. Oh man, I need to get to a toilet to check as soon as I can."
