so,
in the celebrations of holland-brazil, my bag was stolen (as were many others at the place i was watching, and celebrating). In it were my keys, and probably enough to trace me.

should i

- ignore the risk, as they were probably looking for a quick phone and money, cost now €0, potential immense
- change the locks (same key is used on 4 locks in my house), using 2*-brandless stuff, (cost now €27*4+cost to install)
- change the locks using the official certified winkhaus cilinders, probably better quality, and meaning only with the certificate you can reorder keys (costs €127*4 + install).

leaning towards the second option, but my wife would feel better with the thirds..

Argh :(

Well you could view it as an excuse to upgrade the locks. So 3) if you can afford it. Deffo not 1) though..

It's your family man. Do the best you can. Imagine if someone did enter your house and you'd ignored it.

Whether you get the expensive option is up to you, of course.

Yeah, change your locks mate. Not worth the extra risk or worry.

Sorry to hear you got robbed too. Bastards.

Leave your doors unlocked, wait for them to come in, and explain that they shouldn't take your bag again. With violence.

The important thing is to change them from my experience there isn't a great deal of difference between cheap cylinders and the branded versions. The Chinese are very good at copying exactly but for a fraction of the cost.

Or just change/add another lock to the front door. It's trivially easy to change whole locks yourself with only a few simple tools.

I'd imagine any home insurance you may have will be pretty snotty about paying up if you do get burgled. However, I think mine will pay up to get locks replaced if you lose your keys, so check that.

As DBSnappa says, you can probably change them yourself if you have a screwdriver set and a nearby locksmith.

Definitely change them yes. I went to a house party when I was 18 and lost my keys. About eight months later mum was going through her stuff and noticed that all of my dad's jewellry was gone. What made it worse was it was in a brown envelope with his name on and then DOA. Basically they took it all off him after he died and put it in an envelope at the hospital with the cause of death.

Worst of all? Well about eight years ago I found out who it was. A 'friend'.

Well, if you took out the existing 5 bar locks and replaced them with hook and eye catches you could remove by pulling a piece of string in the letterbox opening I would agree, but replacing like for like I can't see how it would make any difference. They're snotty all the bloody time if you're claiming.

something to consider also is that if you fit official locks, you may get a lower insurance premium in the future, so they may pay for themselves over time.

:this:

After we discovered what had happened with the rings and stuff we had Ingersol locks fitted. Huge great heavy things. Our premium went down. There was no point in claiming for dad's stuff as it was too late and money was not appropriate.

in the netherlands there is a discount for the insurance if the lock has a "police-quality-label" approved stamp.
both the current as the replacements the shop i called suggested have that label..

The Ingersols we had had funny wavy keys. No one cut them either. You either had to send an existing key back to the manu and have them cut it or send the code number from the lock to them so they could cut you one. Just did some poking on Google.. Holy Guacamole !

Ingersol SC71, Available in polished chrome, satin chrome and brass. 10 pin cylinder.
Case width 89mm, Height 67mm, Case depth 16mm. Backset 60mm. Handle projection 19mm.
Operation....Deadbolt is automatically thrown when door closes and withdrawn by pull lever or key outside.
Handle is locked by extra turn of the key from outside. Bolt can be held back by turn snib on side of case.
Price: £127.41 (Including VAT at 17.5%)

Double the price of a Chubb ! I remember when you pulled the handle they let out a really loud clack as the door opened :D

Locks that have programmable side bars instead of top pins are bump proof and locks that work on a disc tumbler type system as they don't have pins.

I read it as his bag/keys had turned up after he'd went to the effort & expense of changing all the locks.

I'm with Wullie... I read it as they found the bags and keys after Romanista had gone to the expense of changing the locks.
