A customer bought one from me and they say when they attempted to play the disc the machine said 'Protection' and shut down and won't switch back on.

Am I liable for this in any way should it be the case that this DVD caused the problem?

What was the DVD, and was it a copy?

It sounds properly dubious to me.
Was there anything special about the DVD?

Found this:
http://www.fixya.com/support/t2287309-d ... tx75_keeps
which says it is a fan problem on that system. TBF, sounds more likely than a DVD killing it!

Is their DVD player one of those all-in-one surround sound jobbies? Only I had a Sony surround sound amp that went bang earlier this year, whenever I try to power it on I get a few seconds of incredibly loud thumping noises coming from my speakers before the display on it flashes up 'PROTECTION' and it powers itself off.

Edit: So, if it is, it's probably that the amp inside it has gone bang.

Yes it is a home cinema system. It was a rental version of Amelie on DVD. Samsung HT-X30

The only thing I can think of is if the DVD is buggered. I got one once (new, Watership Down) and it had some swirls in it.. Not scratches, more like a problem with the foil.

I put it in my drive and the drive went mental, lazer was audibly going mad back and forth and I couldn't get it to eject. Any way I shut down the computer and rebooted and the drive was knacked. I had to force eject the disc.

Whether it broke because it was going mental trying to read the disc or was already on its way out though I don't know. I do know it was fine before that..

:this: Mine does this if I short the speaker cable.

Sounds like the amplifier section is buggered and the relays are tripping.. Is it making a clippy clop sort of sound as it does it? Like, a mechanical one?

I know on decent amps they use relays that won't kick in until the amp has done its whoomp thing. I had an amp many years ago that would trip out if you turned it up at all. Thought it might have been the ohm load but turned out the output stages were fucked.

I think it broke through divine intervention. Watership Down, man? It depresses me. :)

:this:

The amp has gone bang-bang, but there's no way the DVD did that.

Aw, I was hoping it'd be:

"My home cinema system has just blown up. I bought a DVD off some mug the other day and I'm trying to convince him it's his fault - any ideas?"

Yeah crushingly sad film. I was in one of my moods when I ordered it :D

My plan is that if they continue to play up (it's a her by the way rather than a him), I suggest they take it to a repair centre and if they will state in writing that it was the DVD that definitely caused the problem I will pay for the repair.

Good call. I won't comment on the woman bit, but if she's anything like my girlfriend, it's definitely the DVD what done it. (Oh, I commented anyway.)

That sounds like a good idea to me as you can be pretty sure it won't be the DVD that's done this. I'd insist they take it someone decent though, as opposed to getting a mate of theirs to check it.

From the sound of it this sounds like a scam by Samsung to me. From what I read it sounds like those units are on edge to do that at the slightest provocation. So if the disc was dodgy and would have made the drive do what most do (READ ERR) then it could possibly have maybe been the DVD that caused it.

But yeah, that sounds like a plan to me N.

Naturally I would insist it was taken to an authorised repair centre of some kind. Hopefully somewhere that wouldn't be swayed by them asking them to say it was the dvd that caused the problem.

Samsung. Demand they send it to Samsung. Tell them you have checked on the internet and their problem is a common one. So hey, send it back to Samsung and bring me the report. If they send it somewhere then they can't interact with that company to try and blag it.

Also tell them that the protection error is usually caused by the amplifier stage and not the DVD drive. (in other words sound dead educated about it.. Killem with kindness)

EDIT. Infact, you can even tell a few white lies and tell them you phoned Samsung asking what causes this error. Or, you could actually phone Samsung and ask, and then not have to tell porkies :)
