Hello,

Since I've installed this proper version of Windows 7, I've been having PS3 Media Server problems.

The PS3 can see and access the files in my "My Videos" folder. However, I've recently added a new folder of videos, and no amount of rebooting both my PC and the PS3, unplugging cables, etc, is making it appear on my PS3's file browser. It's like the PS3 isn't refreshing the Videos folder to find anything new. So all of my folders and videos are still there and playable, barring this one new folder which just won't show up. Anyone got any ideas?

Worked it out. I had to open Windows Media Player and go to my video library where the folder wasn't to be found either. However, I allowed it to update the library and it found it. Surely there's a way to make it do this automatically without having to open Media Player? I've never had this problem before...

Open up services.msc and check if the Windows Media Player Network Summink service is running and set to automatic.

I've never had any luck with the UPnP server built into Windows. I find this pretty good though:

Yeah I used to use that on XP Doc, but these days I tend to just transfer, say, a TV series to the PS3 HDD and watch it directly from there so I can turn my PC off, so it hasn't really been necessary. Might install it again now though.

Ewww, that must be standard def then? Ewwww! I only do HD so I need something to transcode MKV to PS3-friendly formats.

I only bother with movies in HD, then I used to use streaming software. For a tv series, DVD quality suits me fine. Most of the stuff I've got isn't available in HD anyway. Or downloading it would just take too long.

Pro-tip: Searching for stuff in HD and adding 'PS3' into the query often throws up PS3 friendly HD files. Is it m2s or something? They seem as good as mkvs to me and can run natively on the PS3. Suppose it doesn't matter if you have your PC in another room, but mine is near my TV and it's just too noisy to stream stuff and really get into it!

They will be m2ts files and they are identical in quality to the MKV. I don't bother with them because
1) not as many people share them so they sometimes download slower as there are less seeders.
2) I prefer to have files that work on lots of devices, not just the PS3.

As for the PC, I actually use my quiet little HP MediaServer, which lives directly under the TV. It's no bother.

You can always use MKV2VOB to convert to a PS3 friendly format.

If you do that, you're having to do an extra manual step to each download, and now you have two files hanging around; the MKV original and the new M2TS file that MKV2VOB has spat out. If you delete the original, you can't play this anywhere except on the PS3 now; if you keep both, you're using up a lot of disk space.

The PC can play them, which means I can live-transmongnify it across to the iPad or 360.
