I'm thinking of ordering a new laptop, and there's a fairly decent looking Dell.

However, how long do they usually (I know there is no absolute) take from receiving an order to shipping out the goods? It isn't one of their 'fast-track' prebuilt items, although it hasn't been customised.

If it's going to take ages (like more than 3-4 weeks) I probably won't get it from them.

It's really hard to say, but Dell are typically quite slow as they build each one to order unless, as you say, it's a fast-track one.

Is there not another (non-Dell) store that has the Dell laptop you want in stock?

Also, if you continue, don't forget to go through Quidco for 10% cashback.

I tried to order one of their fast-track prebuilt laptops once. They told me it would still take about a fortnight.

3-4 weeks would actually be about right for a Dell laptop.

I have to say, from personal experience, I personally would avoid them like the plague if you're just making an individual purchase.

Dell don't give a fuck about you if you're not a business.

I ordered an Alienware TACT-X keyboard from them and it took nearly a fortnight to arrive. Most annoyingly they had a robot phone my house at 7am to tell me today was the day it was going to be delivered. I wouldn't have a problem with that but I was fast a fucking sleep.

Can I still do that if it's being bought for 'business purposes' and VAT reclaimed?

No, but then you wouldn't be buying from Dell, you'd be buying from Dell SMB.

Another Dell tip - it's always worth checking Dell Outlet http://www1.euro.dell.com/uk/en/dfb/Lap ... &cs=ukdfb1

I had a couple of bargains from there a while back and haven't had any problems with either of them. Delivery is much quicker too because the systems have already been built (most of the Outlet stuff is either cancelled orders, returns or refurbished). I don't know if you can get Quidco on them though.

I'm selling my Dell Inspiron 1545 if you're interested - £275. I believe they're £369 new, I've not had it that long and it's sound.
