Reasons why I won't buy Final Fantasy XIII numbers 1-infinity:

I don't know if I'll get FFXIII or not. I don't seem to have the patience to start new RPGs these days. However, I'd probably play through FFX again if I could speed the loading up somehow.

I'll assume you have at least one fat PS2 :p , so you could always have a bit of fun adding a hard drive (although I'm not sure how much of an improvement you'll see in loading (or even if FFX is fully compatible)).

I bought FF 4 or something for the original Playstation. Played it for half an hour and then took it back in bafflement.
I gues you needed to have played 1-3 first.

I thought they were meant to be self-contained stories? The only constants being airships, a mechanic/inventor called Cid and chocobos.

Of course, nowadays it's all emo prettyboys, terrifyingly beautiful women and weird technology.

I believe the Final Fantasy games did quite well in our top 50 bestest games of all time (as seen on upfornovistors - Ed). As I remarked at the time, given that fact it was a surprise that Rise Of The Robots got no votes.

I find the stories in JRPGs to be suitably epic and involving in spite of the cliches. I certainly enjoyed Skies of Arcadia and Eternal Sonata.

I am considering getting the new FF game, though I might wait until it drops in price (and I get round to playing more of Bayonetta, Mass Effect, Wet and the numerous other games I habitually shun in favour of MW2).

Is it actually supposed to be any good?

The PS3 version has some performance issues that the 360 doesn't have, but the PS3 version is on one disc while the 360 version is on four.

BluRay though innit.

4? I thought it was on 3 DVDs for the 360.

I get the early FF games mixed up with each other thanks to play fan-translated roms of the Japanese Snes versions so I can't remember if I've even played FFIV. FFVII seems to be the most accessible ones in terms of tutorials and help.

I actually preferred, was it 8? The one with the jawa with the hat. The story, the art, the atmopshere, the whole thing, was just so much better than 7.

FF XIII sounds good, though the comments in the review that it only really gets properly going in the second half worry and put me off. I accept that they want to ease you into things instead of overwhelming you, and that sometimes you hold some good stuff back for later (without giving too much away, you get a customizable base and an upgradable ship in the second half of Skies of Arcadia) but there's the risk of you getting worn out by the restrictions before they're due to be lifted.

Eternal Sonata, for example, has the fun realtime combat but as time wears on this degenerates quite quickly into repetitive button bashing. This is eventually saved when they add in the ability to chain together special attacks (I think this was called 'Harmony') which means that rather than just whacking enemies to build up the attack, you're now trying to ensure that when you have full Echoes to unleash a top powered one, your characters are all positioned to do maximum damage to your foes when you chain the attacks together.

Excellent stuff, but it takes far too long to get it.

That was 9. 8 was the realistic one with the gunsword, set in the future.

Then 9 was good. I never played 8. I was still smarting from 7, and it took me a whole extra sequel to try a FF game again.

With 8 the characters didn't seem to matter as the set-up was more tied to the equipment and junctioning so you'd just take equipment from one and bung it on another.

I never did complete it though - the bit where you end up in a building and all your equipment is taken away and you have to fight to win it back bit by bit was enough for me.

The one with Sephiroth was the best, wasn't it? Which one was that?

I can't go by the name of the protagonist, as I always changed them all to 'Cagna'.

The one with Sephiroth was also the one with the snowboarding game, the chocobo breeding, the Emerals and Ruby Weapons, the KOTR materia and would have been around 97/98, right?

That's the best one.

Yes. That was VII, and Kissyfur is a wrongoloid.

I still randomly sing the chocobo song, all the time.

I've only ever liked 7 and 9. Due to the art style. 8 put me off almost instantly with its terrible explanation of the junction system using the word junction over and over again. Junction.

Of the Final Fantasy games, I've only played VII. It bored me after a few hours. Haven't really played many other JRPGs either, with the exceptions of Golden Sun 1 and 2, and (going back a bit now) Shining Force something or other. I did start Chronotrigger on the PSP but I never carry the damned thing so didn't play much of it.

So, should I want FFXIII? It's not getting bought at the moment though, Just Cause 2 and Bad Company 2 will take precedence.

And should I look at the iPhone ports of FFI or II, for that matter?

Anyone played FFXI? Is it any good? I usually steer clear of games with monthly subscriptions so I've never given it a go.

I'm unimpressed with iPhone FF1. It is a 15 year old game, and I think I was just expecting too much of it.

FFI is the only FF game I've ever completed - and I think I've played all of them up to X.

It's simple, in a good way, and I've sunk over five hours into the iPhone port despite having completed it on the GBA a few years ago.

I like the various 'chocobo' tunes. I think my favourite is called 'Brass de Chocobo' possibly.

Three times I attempted FFVII and gave up usually about 7 hours in. I think I gave my copy to TheRev a few years ago.

I won't be buying FFXIII and almost certainly wouldn't even play it if it were given to me such is my dislike of VII

As I have never played any of them, and kind of like RPGs, I may get this, but it had better be good!!! (I did like Panzer Dragoon Saga if that is a JRPG?)

You played Blue Dragon, right? Well that's exactly the same as the good Final Fantasies, but better. Exactly the same better.

I really liked 9, because the cutscenes were awesome, the story was good fun. Never got past disc 3.

Bought FFX on day of release, played it for something like 20 hours and the story still hadn't gone anywhere. Battling Sin for the fourth time was just fucking ridiculous.

I think :attitude: 's idea about Gran Turismo applies - they look good, there is millions of things to do, but they are just chock full of empty calories.
