I've had an idea for a web type app thingy that could be a project.

Basically a scoreboard app/website. User's submit pic and score/number to beat for a competition and they are ranked against their friends. Could submit scores though twitter, pull friend lists from facebook/twitter and post back etc. Scores would be peer reviewed, if enough people you are up against say you posted an invalid score then it's removed. Stuff like that.

It's complicated and way above my random number guessing game coding skills, but I don't think it would be impossible. Although now everyone will point out a website that does this and I will look the fool.

That's not a bad idea. I wouldn't be surprised if it's bindun though.

I was thinking of something like that crazy dwarf game that Pete was playing.

Would this help? Looks like phpbb has the support for it, but not in the subsilver template for some reason - apologies if this has already been suggested.

Here's my contribution for the coding project -

Beat me to it. Needless to say I won't be contributing to any collaborative project, it'd never get out of alpha-status with me involved.

The only notable skills I have are in writing, diplomacy and record management. And even the latter is largely on a case by case investigative basis rather than an infrastructural one.

So um. I can write stuff, politely explain why everyone is stupid except us, and er... find out what happened to your HDP form, like. That'll help, right?

There is a robot somewhere in the Uk that midway through the program pops up the dialogue box "kill John Connor, Y/N?" and will only allow Y as an option. To continue. I done that.

Does it say what language Dwarf Fortress is written in? Not relevant to this particular thread, I was just curious.

I can't see ant details on the site after a quick look. I'm guessing ( purely randomly ) some sort of C, but it's probably something insane like COBOL or FORTRAN or LISP.

How about we* make this Great Idea I've just had:

The Be Excellent to Each Other Succesion Game Web App
Or up to jump?

What?
A web app to automate succession games! If being a geek and reading forums about games has taught me anything it's that succession game's fail. A web thingy to automate it would be grand.

But what is a succession game?
It is when a group of people get together to play a game. The first person plays for a year/level/turn and emails the save to the next person in the list who plays the next turn. And so on. Typically for games like Civilization, Dwarf Fortress, X-Com etc.

Why do they need an app?
Because generally you get a group of people who agree at the start and then when they realise they are 10 turns from having a go give up before their chance comes. Or people forget to do their turn and so everyone is left waiting, not wanting to 'be a dick' and carry on without them. And anyway who had the turn before? Which save should they use. Wait I'm confused. Fuck it. And so on.

So what would this do?
A person would login and start a game. Then people could sign up to join (aka give their emails). The starter may choose to vet emails first. The starter would take their turn then upload the save to the website. The website would email the save to a RANDOM** person on the list and sets a dead line. The next person has until then (2 days or whatever) to take their turn and email the new save file back to the site (avoiding confusion). If not the web app chooses another person and so on.

[iWhy, what are the benefits?[/i]
You wouldn't need to make your email very public. You wouldn't need to maintain a big list of who was playing. Encouraging people to still play. In addition it would draw people to the forum. Hell they might discuss their game here... maybe even in a .... sub forum ... gasp.

For my brilliant idea I merely want 10% of all royalties. And a high five.

*I'm only Fortran Literate so the 'we' is a bit much.
** could be changed in settings, but I think this would be the best for the default.

That certainly gets a high five from me.

o/

Sounds like it may actually fill an existing gap as well. The app would be fairly simple I should think - setup up a game, leave comments, view old versions, link to a forum off-site, set people as players / watchers / admins, vierw a log of what's happened, a few other what-nots but nothing too scary.

We can call it "Sucessiono! The Tip-Top Succession Game Management System!"
