Proper arcade games that cost monies, MAME doesn't count.

I think the only one I've completed is Killer Instinct II. I did it with all the characters and on a few of them with only one credit. I loved that game.

Oh wait - and some shooters - Time Crisis 1, 2 and 3, House of the Dead and Ghost Squad. I got to the last boss in Ninja Hunt (or something - one with a pair of light guns that used flames as lives).

The Simpsons I used to be able to 1 credit. Also finished The Punisher numerous times. I love Capcom beat-em-ups, me.

I used to put a quid in Area 51 and get that finished. That was when 1 credit = 20p though.

The four-player one where Bart was on a skateboard? Fucking Hell, I remember that being scary tough.

As mentioned in my MAME post -

Soccer Brawl. Brilliant futuristic footy game. I think I had to continue once or twice and it meant I was late back to school, but it was worth it. :) When I got a Neo Geo AES, it was one of the first games I picked up, but it wasn't the same.

Virtua Tennis. I only beat this because I'd played the damned thing to death on the Dreamcast before I'd ever seen the arcade version.

I used to play it so often that I developed a callus on my trigger finger.

Surely what should count are single-credit runs, regardless of how you played them? Any numpty can pay his way to the end.

Anyway, games I've cleared on actual cabs include Vulcan Venture, Darius Gaiden, Thunder Cross and, er... not much else, as it happens! The rest of my clears are all either on Saturn/PS/DC ports or in MAME.

Depends on the game type I guess. You could give me infinite credits and I still wouldn't beat most one-on-one fighters.

Ah no, you're not who I thought. Still, OpWolf was another coin swallower once you got off level one.
I used to get Street Fighter calluses.

Some of it depends because arcade games dont always end - you just loop back round again and again - and that was occasionally on the whim of the arcade owner (Track and Field and Hypersports can be set to continue 'forever' or to finish after 1 loop of the events if you count that as 'finish' then i could finish both of them)

Other games i could play until you got the credits and the end of the game in a single go were :

Bubble Bobble
720'
Crossbow
Wonderboy in Monster land
Streetfighter II and variants
Streetfighter IV (on my first play about a month ago)
Golden Axe
Outrun (at least for some of the routes)
Double Dragon (when i had someone very good at the game playing as 2P)

There are lots of others that loop but are difficult to get all the way round - stuff like Scramble or Green Beret , but you can just keep playing them 'forever'

That's different, though! That's still a valid kind of defeat, but winning with your infinite credits wouldn't really be a meaningful kind of victory. :p

Indeedy. Most Gradius games have about 250 loops, but getting through the first one would count as a completion in most reasonable folks' eyes. It's different with something like Psyvariar, though, where the loops are really short and technically easy to reach, but where scoring is all that matters, and can be done badly even if you never die.

I've only ever completed House of the Dead 2 on the arcade. That was tough!

Aye, with the shotguns. I think it was 3. I don't like that one.
HOTD 1 had pistols though, so you give it £2 and pick both up, Woo-style.

I really didn't consider The Simpsons that tough back in the day. I did play the Capcom beat-em-ups pretty exclusively though.

Just remember I used to be able to 1 credit Return of the Jedi, too. But that used to do an infy-loop thing as well.

I *loved* 720' , its a shame its one of the few games you cant really play emulated because of the custom controller , it doesn't really work on any of the analogue sticks you can have on the PC or any of the consoles (that of course didnt stop Atari / Midway from releasing it on about 4 different compilations - they just dont play the same way).

I'd travel a long distance to play a real working 720 machine again (the only ones i know of are in the US) - my local arcade was really good at re-using cabinets , our Hypersports was a Cabaret Missile Command (and still had the little atari buttons for the 1-4 players) and when they eventually took out 720' the magnificent cabinet came back a few weeks later ...... as a Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles :'(

You could do a MAME challenge just on Capcom beat em ups - I bet Grim... and Gazchap would love to play Capcom's AVP and point out all of the parts that contradict the movies :-)

I've only ever completed one proper arcade game and that was Final Fight - and that was with a friend and about £10 in ten pence pieces acquired from a lucky steak on a 10p pusher.

Aliens. After lots of coins (but not a too excessive amount)

X-Men. Again not too bad with the coins.

Turtles Through Time - On free play one new years day at Sunspot Arcade here.

Robocop - I think I have anyway.

Street Fighter, Street Fighter 2, Street Fighter 2 Rainbow, Super Street Fighter 2, X-Men Vs Streetfighter

Cadillacs and Dinosaurs - I think. Can't entirely remember but I'm pretty sure I have.

Do Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back count, even though they don't necessarily have an end?

Wrestlefest - That was a one credit affair. There was a very simple knack to beating it but playing it was so much fun. Ultimate Warrior/Hulk Hogan tag team for the win!

Theres also a Konami one which has you play as Ripley - the AVP one is great though

If your using the version of MAME that i posted to the challenge thread then download this rom here :

http://edgeemu.net/details-25920.htm

Drop it into the ROMS folder under MAME (dont unzip it) and choose

"Alien vs predator (Euro 940520)" rom "avsp"

For the Konami one which has you playing as Ripley to save Newt download this one here http://edgeemu.net/details-25687.htm drop it into the roms folder and choose "Aliens (world set 1)" rom "aliens"

For completeness theres also a (imho) rather poor gun game as well called Alien3 which you can grab here http://edgeemu.net/details-25682.htm drop into the roms folder and choose "Alien 3: The Gun(world)" rom "Alien3"

With the Capcom one you can of course just pump in credits to complete it if you like which most of us did when we played it in the retroleague http://s11.zetaboards.com/RetroLeague/topic/474700/1/ (worth reading the thread for some hints)

I thought it looked familiar :)

My friend had it on his supergun. Was a similar board setup to the super streetfighter type. Blue bottom with the game cart part on the top.

I beat Double Dragon at a fairground arcade once. It cost me about a tenner but on the plus side I did manage to beat the other player (some random Italian who couldn't speak English).

Never completed owt else as I never hovered on one game long enough. Got to the last screen (I think) on Bongo though.

Turtles Through Time - On free play one new years day at Sunspot Arcade here.

Come to think of it, I did complete the first Konami TMNT arcade game back in 1991, with my brother and two randoms. The machine spewed out lots of free credits at one point, which helped.

If you could pump enough credits into it in the late 80s/early 90s, then I probably 'completed' it.

Off the top of my head, pretty much all done 2-player with my brother:
Double Dragon
Double Dragon 2
Dragon Ninja
POW
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (maybe Turtles in Time as well, I can't remember)
The Simpsons

I never completed anything in the arcades. I played a lot, just was too poor to spend much and too rubbish to get far on what I had :'(

Wasn't there a fault with those machines where you could hammer the start buttons for more credits or something?

This sounds familiar as I remember a machine that was practically on free play all the time.. That is untill one day it wasn't. That was the day when a friend of a friend went and hammered the start button whilst someone else was playing and wasted his credits! Excellent.
