I was thinking today that I need some better and much quicker way of checking all the webshites I check for news and things, and was thinking about a site or something my old supervisor was showing me, where all of the RSS feeds he bookmarked all appeared in groups in his browser and then all appeared in one big page for him to view. Tech news as one big news page, general news, sport news etc etc. Is this via a website like Google or something or is it a plugin for firefox? How do you all check these things, what's best and RMDed? I want something that will save me checking all my main bookmarks to cut down on my pissing about surfing time, as I don't want to waste so much time doing that anymore. ATM I just have a couple feeds saved in my firefox bookmarks regular style, but I know there must be a better way than this.

How do you do it?

Google has a fairly decent RSS aggregator, but I imagine there are lots of them out there.

I use Thunderbird at work and Safari at home.

(Though I use Safari for some feeds at work, too, because Thunderbird is stupidly fussy and quite often declares perfectly good feeds invalid.)

I love Google Reader, for these reasons:

1) I have the same list of subscriptions and (more importantly) Read/Unread tracking wherever I use it
2) keyboard shortcuts
3) good mobile device support (I've used it extensively on both iPhone and WinMob)

Cool, 2 for Google. Is that a browser plugin/Software or via a web page?

After using various Firefox plugins that never really gelled with me I found that Google reader was what I was looking for with the bonus that it's online and I can check it anywhere.

Also, if it's important to you, there are easy to set up sharing options so can share articles with other people and have you own little rss feed of things you like.

It's a webapp. Bluecup is right too, the social sharing thing is quite neat.

I use Windows Live (http://www.live.com) which is very good. I also have some in my Vista sidebar.

So do you sign up for a Google Apps account and then you can use the Reader? I've been meaning to get a Google Apps account anyways.

Yes.

I use Google Reader too. You can access it via https but I need to packet sniff my computer one day to see what it encrypts.

I had a Google Apps account at my last job in Leeds, and was never too sure what I had and didn't have with it, it was a little confusing as to what it incorporated.

There's a new thing called snowl or something. I read about it.

I don't really get all this RSS stuff to be honest. You people bring me all the news and interesting information I need.

Yes. All @gmail.com accounts are also Google App accounts so you probably already have one. The same login works on almost all Google's web services.

Don't confuse this with Google Apps for your Domain though, which is a different service with different accounts.

I don't have that work one anymore from my last job, so I'll sign up for a new account if I choose Google. Ta. I did really like the Google Apps account we had there though, I thought it was very nifty indeed.

I'll have a look at snowl and Live as well, ta kalmar and Grim...

For the mac NetNewsWire is a nice, free, stand alone app that does RSS feeds. I use that.

Yeah Google here too, I like the personalised homepage thing and there's a reader app for that. In fact now that I think about it I seem to use Google web services for quite an alarming number of things.

Opera sidebar for me. It also does all my emails and newsgroups, so it makes sense to keep it all in once place. It's always on the left when I'm browsing the internet, and doesn't get in the way when I'm working.

I find I don't use bookmarks in my browser any more. Google Reader has my complete list of "sites to check all the time", and delicious.com has my complete list of "sites I might need again one day".

I never liked iGoogle, but I do like Gmail and Google-Reader. For some reason I can't have one page with bits of everything on it... it just doesn't sit right for me.

There's one blog I read which appears to be hand-coded. Whilst I appreciate the effort involved, the lack of RSS is frustrating as I've got used to adding things to Google Reader. Generally, my rule is 'three good posts and you're added'. I should start pruning at some point.

Looking at my stats, I think I need to find a more fulfilling job...

Did someone ask about a RSS reader Firefox plugin that works like a twitter client with notifications and stuff? Because I just found Brief and it's excellent.

I have been using feedly, which is real nice.

Google Reader is king. I'm happy to add people up (I had a thread here a while back) for sharing of favourite posts purposes, although Buzz does that as well now. I think I have Gaywood on there. (Not that I'll be able to see his reply if he confirms or denies this.) :hat:

But yeah, I really don't understand why you'd ever need any reader other than Google Reader. I can login anywhere or on my iPhone and catch up on all of my favourite sites, and I can share the stuff I like with chums. It has genuinely changed the way I use the interwebs.

Google reader here too - and since reinstalling my OS and spending an afternoon auditioning various plugins on Chrome whilst avoiding installing Firefox, I've not looked back. Google can nowadays more or less provide a total service so easy and good you almost forget to worry all your activity is with one company. Only downside is I've two Google accounts so logging into and out of gmail etc can be a total arse. I tend to get to things on my less used account through an incognito window and the same bookmarks.

When Wave gets good the only two things I'll not be using chrome for on my machine will be Eve Online and Football Manager. I am pwned.

I have never used RSS feeds 8)

Probably something I should look into, but then I am trying to spend less time dicking around on the internet and I'm not sure this would help me towards that.

David Mitchel is great, but suddenly enormously overexposed. Expect him to nosedive in a year or so when everyone's fucking sick of him. It doesn't help that he keeps being in such shit programmes (peep show excluded, obv).

I quite like him when he's on some of the Radio 4 shows, not fussed about half the stuff he appears in on the tellybox though & Peep Show was a mostly a big pile of wank.

Ditto. Google Reader was great when I was just using it from my desktop browser but now I've got the iPhone (and incidentally discovered options like "show only unread items" and "sort by oldest") it's bloody fantastic.
