There is a program on channel five right now called Extraordinary Animals. This episode is about a dolphin and is studying the use of sonar and clicking. It has then went on to eplain the case of a young boy in England who is blind. He is training himself to 'see' the world around by using clicks to listen for objects. It really is quite incredible!
A quick google brought up a BBC news story so it is possible everyone here already knows about this but I am quite amazed. link.

The guy who taught the young boy is on the program now...he just explained the shape of a tree in front of him that he was randomly taken to, without touching. Even able to describe that the trunk is uniform in shape with no protruding branches until the top.

I watched a programme about this a while ago, following a black lad in the US. It was mightily impressive, but even he was by no means the only person doing this.

He was rollerskating around his street at one point, showing off. Unfortunately for him, he stopped paying attention and crashed into a parked car.

They ended the program after doing an experiment where they hung lots of objects around the room and got him to find them and if possible identify them. He did very well and was able to find almost all objects, even being able to identify a rope as being soft and with a fringe through clicking alone.
