Lave has decreed the other thread be a "celebration of excellence" or some such. Hence this thread where I say: Stu's writing has always left me cold, I think his output is highly overrated, and I'm pretty sure the man himself is a hateful prick. It's probably not a coincidence that he scrapes by in near-poverty as he appears to have hugely pissed off almost every editor he has ever submitted work to. But I'm sure he's a smashing bloke really and every single editor is in the wrong because I don't understand what patterns mean.

I will not idolise this jerk.

Heh... I'm not especially interested either way really. I will say that it was never Stu himself that attracted me to WoS. I was looking for something else entirely, stumbled upon the forum, found the discussions there interesting enough to lurk for a bit and then eventually joined in myself. My only real exposure to Campbell before WoS was his occasional column on Digitiser... where I used to often disagree with whatever he was saying and generally thought he came across as a bit of a prick! :D

On WoS, most of the time he seemed okay, just every now and then he'd get on his high horse about something, but then that's kind of his 'thing' isn't it? I imagine he's probably not even half as disagreeable in person. I mean, I've met Dudley before, and he seemed alright enough in person! :p

Also, why exactly are we doing this again right now? Has someone got a book coming out about the Schism or something?

So why rake over old coals with a brand new thread? Does the length of time a grudge is held somehow exclude it from the general remit of the forum?

This is fucking stupid. Stop being childish.

You're genuinely adding to the little collection of threads that are making everybody on this forum, not just you, look like a childish tit. You're making me feel part of this pathetic two year grudge, which I'm not. Stop it. It's fucking lame.

Oh and i agree with Jonarob - a lot of posts and threads on here in the last week or so seem to be some sock puppets getting very excited over stirring stuff up and i cant see what the point of it all is (from what i can see it started with the CG 'return' and has continued bubbping along in the backgrouns since)

Mods should be permitted to be more active on the subject of sock puppet accounts. I realise this may be unpopular but sock puppets are nearly always attention seekers or troublemakers.

Well, I shouldn't have posted this, although (however unwelcome it may be here) it is my opinion of Stu and his work. There's a difference between "bearing a grudge" and "not liking someone". I'll keep to myself next time.

Well yeah, maybe you should. If you want to criticise his work, that's one thing (although I have to say I think you're very, very wrong and perhaps your opinion of such obviously good writing is marred by your inexplicable hatred), but calling someone a prick and saying you hate them isn't really in the spirit of this forum - not when you're talking about an actual person who has obviously came here and read those words. That's not exactly fair in my opinion. People seem to think of Stu as some sort of celebrity that they can slag off for fun and he won't be arsed. Maybe he isn't bothered. In fact, he probably isn't. But he can still read what you're saying which is enough, in my opinion, to not act like such a horrible cunt. You wouldn't call me a prick on here even if you didn't like me, because I know that's not the sort of person you are, so why do you think it's okay to name call Stu?

But yeah, I think you should keep that sort of opinion to yourself. If you can slag his writing off and justify the criticism with more than "because he's a prick", go for it.

While I am unhappy with what Dr Gaywood posted, you also have no proof at all that (Linda - Ed) has read this forum or even posted. We have an outbreak of sock puppets and you seem to believe that one of them might be genuine.

Someone is having a chuckle at our expense knowing full well all the mods have gone to Manchester.

Well, maybe so, but it's not inconceivable that it is actually Stu - a spike of visits to his blog from somewhere new isn't something you have to go and look for, it'd be pretty obvious in any analytical software.

Indeed it isn inconceivable but the pattern of sock puppets built up before the blog thread began. Someone very petty who has been lurking on here for a long time was waiting for their moment of glory. I can guess who as well.......

And if it is, so what? He's hardly thin skinned considering he has a long history of just falling out with people because he thinks he is always right.

You're absolutely right, but thick-skinned or not I still don't condone it. And like I said earlier (in this thread or another, I've lost track), it's making all of us look like douches.

Not really he was just proving that it was him (with added insult).

I thought the style of swearing was spot on myself but when the American thing was thrown in to the mix I was beginning to doubt my judgement. Glad it's not failing me.

I thought that.

And then I rememberered that the loveable FuckHobbit is possibly one of the most helpful hominid creatures that I have ever met. He had the time to explain to me how to get to (Sesame Street - Ed) on a Sunday morning after I'd kept him and Pete up all night by dint of my not being able to breathe, and showed me the route on a magical device.

I couldn't hear anything for days afterwards, but, he's all good in my book, and I'd buy him a beer anytime.

Despite him having bigger feet than me.

I know you said that you didn't think he would have the knowhow to spoof or proxy but he's spent the last ten years that I've seen getting himself banned from forums yet still manages to know exactly what's going on.

What does that link to, Wogan? Obviously WoS, but what's the thread about?

Quote:

A long time ago, Rev Stu had a disagreement with (I think) some builders because they had parked their van, blocking him in (or something along those lines), and he was later given some bother by the police because someone had super-glued the locks of the builders' van.

Ahh I didn't know about that thanks for the explanation.

The thread on WOS was Stuart pointing out that it was him who posted here (and throwing his traditional insult in).

Ah, OK! I can't see that, just a 'you have to be logged in to read' type message.

I didn't realise it was actually him. Oh well, that's good at least as it's one less fake troublemaker.

Which is of course not at all why he posted here to begin with.

Still remember kids, he did nothing to us. There he was all kindly and benevolent and we just threw a Wii and PSP in his face and stormed off.

O.K you sparked my curiosity. I noticed Dimrill mentioned a Wii earlier.

What's the deal with that? I thought it was simply because he tried to charge for certain parts of the forum and some articles.

PM me please Chinners. I don't want to be guilty of causing more shitstorms :)

It was some kind of referral scheme, all above board but a number of people did go to a fair amount of effort to get Stu the required points to qualify for the freebies.

Mind you, the deal was that if he got the gadgets he'd write about them - which is what happened, so it wasn't like it was a con or anything, and it's not like anyone had a gun to their head.

OK so people went to a lot of trouble for him and then shortly after? he asked for money ?

I'm just trying to put all of this together.

I wouldn't say it was shortly after. Also, if someone completed a referral for him, they got to be a star member (or something like that) so you got bonus content. So I trialled out lovefilm for a bit, got a few films to copy, er, watch and he gets his referral and I got a bit of bonus content. I didn't agree with the charging for the site in end but no-one was having their arm twisted for the referral stuff.

Although it went a bit awry when he then edited peoples (I think it was Mimi) posts so that only he could get any benefit from such schemes.

Oh no, nobody got their arm twisted. But it's a bit fucking galling given his reworking of the facts of the time, and making himself "Kindly Uncle" Stu about it. Can we get in touch with Trading Standards for that username?

No, I don't think it was me. I might be wrong, but I think it was actually Craig, asking if it was plausible that it could be done n a sort of 'chain' so that incrementally everyone could end up benefiting as one of the 'deals' let you start an account with something or another (bookies?) but you didn't need to complete the bet. It might not have been Craig, and I just remember him recounting it to me or chatting about it, but I do kind of remember it, because it seemed to make sense once Stu had one of each of the consoles by then.

Sorry, that was @Mr Dave, but Dimrill's beard got in the way.

Although it went a bit awry when he then edited peoples (I think it was Mimi) posts so that only he could get any benefit from such schemes.

I think that's justifiable in that it was HIS forum and it was HIS idea. So he didn't want to lose out on any referrals. However if it was after he'd finished his deals and whatnot then it would seem a bit mean.

Also objecting to his username on here seems a bit daft, I'm sure it was intended somewhat sarcastically. But hey maybe I'm wrong about that.

Anyway I don't want to drag this on, I like it here for the most part as well as over in Wos.

If anything positive has come out of this, I've started to feel increased warmth towards Martyn Brown.

Again, my memory is fuzzy, but I think that the whole point was that Stuart had by then acquired each of the available consoles. Either way, that wasn't the cause of any forum split, which I think happened some time later.
