As a prelude to the Beex meet, Curio has pointed out the nearby presence of the (reputedly very good) Michael Caines at the Abode restaurant. Tasting menu is here, for £99 per person, including wine (or £65 without the wine).

Quote:
Jerusalem artichoke and truffle soup
Borgo dei Vassalli Pinot Grigio 2008, Friuli, Italy
**
Terrine of duck liver
with pickled rhubarb
Jurancon Moelleux Domaine Castera 2006, Jurancon, France
**
Cod cheeks with belly pork
ginger and apple purée, fennel cream sauce
Wittmann Riesling Trocken 2008, Rheinhessen, Germany
**
Saddle of venison
braised red cabbage, chestnut purée, jasmine tea sauce
Gladstone Auld Alliance 2006, Wairarapa, New Zealand
**
Selection of three local cheeses
Porto Pocas Vintage 1997
**
Warm rice pudding
rhubarb compote
Fairview Le Beryl Blanc 2008, Paarl, South Africa
**
Lime pannacotta
with compressed pineapple and rice pudding ice cream
**
Coffee and petit fours

There is also a vegetarian tasting menu.

Would anyone like to go to this on the Friday night before the Manchester meet? I'll be there, as will (dum dum dum) Danielle "fanny stupid" sistaflapjack, who is also (dum dum dum) coming to the Manchester meet. Curio would like to come but doesn't want to be a third wheel. Clearly, another Beexer should man up and take an eight course dinner for the team. And Mr and Mrs Craster are to be those Beexers.

(And yes, for the purposes of the "how many Beex meets can we arrange before myp's incredible distant Manchester one happens": this counts.)

I think I can be that man.

Given my recent "diet" and subsequent stomach shrinkage, I will require a bucket. Maybe more than one.

Edit: They'd better have beers as well as wine to accompany by then though, or I'm going to get thrown out almost immediately. If I wanted vinegar, I'd ask for vinegar. And malt, not expensive fancy bollocks.

An hundred quid for 10 crisps with fish shit on them?! An hundred quid for going for something to eat and coming out of the place still hungry?!

I was thinking "yes" up until I saw the price. I am now thinking "no"

You could make up for it by chopping an Xbox 360 into tiny bits and flushing them down the toilet.

Hm, actually - at that price, I'm quite likely to find myself complaining very very loudly if it doesn't meet my expectations. Perhaps Fanny Stupid doesn't need that particular kind of introduction to in-person Beexers. S'up to Gaywood, really.

What's the vegetarian option?

Although a curry (or even 4 curries) is sounding like better value for money.

That's 10 curries at my local excellent one. Or 2 and a half week's worth of groceries.

I've eaten there and wasn't blown away.
I would hve thought for such self confessed a meat lover that Bem Brasil would have been a better choice, its not as posh but its fantastic meats

Or I can go to Royal Hospital Road with people I like. Hmm.

It's a churrascaria. You get a plate, put about 3 olives on it to wave some pretense in the direction of health, then just wait for them to bring you MEAT. Repeat until you're ill.

Unless they take your order while you're in the toilet, and find out that the rest of your party have ordered you a vegetarian meal while you've been away.

Meant to tell you, I went to Predo before Christmas and the chicken hearts were lush and in abundance.

Is DoccyG going to go for the "diamond ring in the glass of Champagne" trick?

Michael Caines ABode in Glesga was a disappointment & I'd only eat a couple of things on that menu anyway, so I'll pass.

Ok here's my pick of 3 places to try:

Samsi, in Spinningfields. Like yo sushi but better with excellent ala carte hot stuffs in addition to the sushi go-round. About 15 plus drinks.
EastZEast, there's two now, but the one near what was UMIST is the best. Indian food par excellence 20-30 per head plus beer..
The Modern, housed on the 6th floor of urbis. Posh locally sourced food with views over the city. Probably 40 per head plus drinks

If anyone has been to these and wants to comment I'd be interested to know if they agree

I was there this Monday - it's an annual tradition that we go their for a pal's birthday, as it's his favourite restaurant.

£100 for a meal? I suddenly feel so very working class.

I'd come, but £100 per head is a little steep at the moment, especially with Miss Malabar being allergic to flavour and real food.

I prefer Zouk to EastZEast, the latter are utterly incapable of giving me spicy, hot food. The dips for poppadums are great though, especially the garlic one.

Zouk has a really nice menu and the service was great the couple of times I've been, admittedly on Wednesdays at 6pm.

So who is coming then?

I think the list was:

Curio
Craster & Mrs Craster
DocG & Sista Flapjack

Grim... was a "maybe, probably not". Other people who expressed an interest (Bik) were wavering.

So am I booking a table for five then? If you're a "maybe" we can always book you in then cancel it back off if you drop out, although I expect they'll want 72 hours notice or something.

I'm sure she'll be fine. On her own. On her birthday. Her first birthday after you got married.

Completely fine.
