Have a read of this:

"The qualifying bet will be the first bet which is both matched and settled that you placed during the promotion period. In the event that a number of bets are settled at the same time it will be the first one placed which will count towards this promotion."

Now, the $64,000* question.

Based on that passage, obviously the bet needs to be placed inside the promotion period. But would you expect it needed to be matched and settled inside that period as well?

There's not a qualifying period, but a promotional period. If your first bet was matched and settled during the promotional period, quids in. Else, tough luck.

My reading of that is that the bet only has to be placed in the Promotional Period, it shouldn't matter when it is actually settled. It doesn't even seem especially ambiguous to me. But I'm guessing whichever company runs this promotion begs to differ?

You're right, I'm an idiot. Amended. And I couldn't possibly say, I'm trying not to lead the witness.

It seems clear to me that the offer pertains to the first bet you placed during the Promotional Period, and that that bet has to be both matched and settled to be eligible, but there is no stated dependency on the matched and settled dates also having to have occurred within that same Promotional Period. i.e. they can take place at any time after the placement of your first bet. The caveat is likely to come in the form of another clause in the terms that states all three statuses - bet, matched and settled - must take place within a certain timeframe, such as 30 days ,or something.

It was Betfair, but after a second polite but stroppy email they've seen the light. Hurrah!
