General thread for PC problems and the rest of it, so if anyone has similar problems they can maybe use this as a ref' page mayhap.

*******************

!!!ERROR!!!

Okay-this is going to be pretty confusing as I half know what I'm on about and half don't-here's the background (skip the italics to get to the nitty gritty as I do ramble on)

Heya! Background for you on this:

New computer for the office, big problems, I hate it and have ripped out some of my purple locks.
Last week while I was off ill people decided it'd be a good idea to do technical things. Simon has trouble with a toaster for god sake...

So Colin comes in yesterday, after being instructed last week to make a computer for Si from a pre owned one (vampmypcup.commage) and then Jo can have the old pc as it has all the embroidery software and artwork things installed on there already and has super dooper memory-ness!
So now he asks Colin to come and clone the information off the old PC (we'll call it ACES) onto the new PC (We'll call it MOFO) so I can still use everything
This is the theory...not the actual practice....so I've had problems with the damned thing all day! IT IS SPESHUL AND HAS...PROBLEMS!

We are with btconnect.com for emails and I have been trying to get onto our email via that (we don't use Outlook Express...no idea why...it was before my time-possibly dinosaurs decreed we use this!) so I have gone onto there and I see it say 'LOADING' but no emails or anything, I cannot access any of the folders I have on there and all of my artwork is stored on there! DILEMMA! OH NOES! So I check with the G-Unit and he logged on there with my details and managed to open EVERYTHING-so it is PC, yes?

So now this has happened....cue email to Colin below:

Hello Colin!

I'm thinking of ending my life right now...here's why:

I know you are on a job at the moment so I thought it'd be best to email a description of the things that have happened.

I was just typing an email up when the computer decided to switch itself
off, it wasn't like a proper 'shut down' though as it came on again pretty
quickly. It auto-restarted and a blue screen appeared with lots of
information on it. Before it dissapeared and the PC turned itself off again
I saw it say 'please contact your system provider' and the words 'XP
updates'

When the screen came on it then said

One of the files containing the system's registry data had to be recovered
by use of a log or alternate copy. The result was successful

This message has now popped up twice.* I am going to be leaving the PC for
now as I don't really want to be messing with it in case something goes
wrong.
These are the things I have done since you left today:

I have wrote 1 email (2-including this one) via Outlook express-now that's all well and good and I can email but I have FOLDERS on the btconnect.com thing that I need the artwork and such off

I have installed Firefox as I wanted to see if internet explorer was playing
up because of the problems with BT I've been having. It isn't BT apparently
as I have asked someone else to have a look on their PC and they have been
anble to open my folders and get access to all the messages in the inbox
too. Firefox also won't open the emails, so I'm a little worried as to what
the problem actually is and why I can't open my emails via the BT link.

I have opened a few old artworks

I haven't installed anything new, other than Firefox.

So, if you can just email me back that'd be great as I have no idea why all
of that information came up on the blue screen and why it's said that
message above twice to me.

Also I had a number of fonts I had installed on the old PC and they don't seem to be on here-I take it you just copied files over?

Also I still cannot scan. This is a massive pain in the frigging ass for me.
The folder that the scanner and the pc share is called: //MFP_00F49888/file_share/ I've found that info off the printer/scanner-that's where all the information is stored, is there any way to get the info back on here? Or will I need the old PC back to get all the artwork I scanned over on it previously? Can I make a new network for the PC and scanner that I can use today to start scanning afresh as I need to send artwork for approval to people and am a little stuck

I need the PC to be up-and-running as I need to embroider things and such like, as is my job.

Thanking you very much!

Katania a.k.a the poor sod left with this PC

Thanking you very much!

*It has also done it this morning after turning the pc on first thing, so something is obviously wrong with it.

A friend of mine also said:

Hi, Kat. My guess is that if someone tried to "clone the information"
by just copying all the files, including windows, then it won't work.
windows has to be installed fresh, because it's a different computer.
or maybe they overwrote some system files on the new pc when they did
the copy (which might have screwed up the registry for example). Is bt
connect a web interface thing? maybe the pc isn't set right for
accessing network or internet sites.

(INSERT ABOVE FROM ACE....who is actually ACE!)

************

I am fucking fed up

This was my first thought, too.

Seems like you had a non-technical tech, if this is what happened.

Oh bollocks...

Now then-the scanner thing-it's scanning SOMEWHERE, it's still set to that MFP whatsit...is there any way I can make another and start scanning there? Surely there is yeah?

I'll have to wait until Monday as Colin isn't returning my calls...I think maybe calling him a halfwit may have not gone down well if he picked it up...

When Si gets in (after playing around all day) I shall try and explain to him that it's broken, if he doesn't understand I shall smash the new PC up.

There's no way to salvage the 'new' one then? Like stripping it??

I don't mean to be offensive, but it's quite hard to diagnose something that random with someone who doesn't know about computers, remotely. You need to turn it off and get a techie bod in who knows his onions. And I'd recommend against the guy you had before.

Basically, you're probably gonna need to reinstall Windows and start again before we can make any meaningful diags.

I'm wondering if a linux boot CD could get you temporarily up and running (enough to email and print etc).

If it's stable under linux a nuke-and-reinstall of windows should solve the rest of it.

You really aught to be using a mac though :D

Well here we go:

Sheepeh-I completely understand that as I am rejected in the ways of PC-and quite frankly everything else. I'm not offended as I've just re-read what I've wrote and it's probably the most confusing thing I've read in my entire life (the exception being my paper on the Arab/Israeli conflict which my History teacher informed me he later had it placed on his wall at home-bless him)

Kalmar-Si has forbidden the use of the Mac. We had one, he got rid of it-he's the boss and therefore I cannot argue (well...)

Mali-An axe would be a very good thing right now.

GazChap wrote:

Well it's not that simple any more, dear.
Simon says (put your hands on your head) that he doesn't want you doing it because your not a tecchy (I pointed out that Colin was...apparently and he fucked this right up the jacksie) He's being very fucking awkward now about the whole thing because he doesn't understand what the problem is and, quite franky, won't fucking listen when I try and explain very patiently to him. He doesn't want either of the PC's leaving the work places, so that's up to him

I'm not coming back to work after today-fuck him and his fucking ignorant attitude to other people. Let's hope I get that job at Audi as it sounds very very promising and I should hear back soon

I now shall be giving you all some peace as guess what-the PC smells of burning toast....oh shit the fucking bed...

Oh man. If you could italicise all the waffly bits in every post, that'd be solid gold.

Anyway, you did this wrong. You should've had three pages about Pru's new cardigan in italics, followed by this in normal type. ;)

I spent two years working as an IT technician and network administrator at a secondary school, but if he doesn't want to listen to reason then fair enough.

I wish I could, but I have two people that are regular customers that are awaiting things today and I see them a lot and don't want to let them down. After today that's it though, I've just had enough.

The toast smell (is trying so hard not to laugh because she's angry still) Oh don't I feel daft-it's the heater...I think I may be de-evolving. Christ I'm thick.
Myp-I was assuming everything I said was waffle? So I thought I'd be nice and do it all the same?

Enough italics for now then, until something waffly comes up!

Gaz- Yes, but you are only in your 20's and he thinks that means you don't know anything. He's a cunt *shrugs*

Ironic then that people in their 20s more than likely know 10,000% more about computers than people older, as they grew up with them at home.

(no disrespect to any of you old farts on here, natch)

Yes, but it doesn't matter to him does it? He knows best because he knows everything....this sounds like someone else I know

Anyway-problems solved because I've told him to fix it himself, so rather amusingly he's gone with a little tool box like a cross angry fat kid and is off to the other unit to sort out the OLD one that has nothing wrong with it-good luck...twat

10,000 x 0 = 0.

Seems Si was right, on this one.

Looks like Shin's spoiler post was the culprit.

Install an instant costume change lever on the batpole and your wife will love you forever. No longer will she have to spend hours trying on clothes to decide what to wear on a night out!

Incidentally, who do you work for?

Depends where you get the imfo from..

You could argue that we suggested what we should have installed. The government ignores us want a cheaper option that did not work properly. and we had to make good a bad job.

but yes we did CSA and others

I HAVE A PRINTER PROBLEEEEM!

Who wants to be a smart little bunnykins and help out? You? Yeah, you'll do!

I have a Samsung ML-1510 Laser Printer *ZAP!* and I am currently doing some artwork that needs Spot colour processing on it (yes it's black and white I know, buuut-) because I need the image to go onto a silk screen.

Does anyone know anything about 'spots' for designs? I have altered the size and shape via photoshop but am having a bastard of a time printing the spots-I don't want them covering the WHOLE page-just the dark bits of the image

I've scanned an image that's been drawn. I want to print a film off with 'dots' greyscale ones. But I don't want i ton the background and everywhere else-I just want it where the image is and I can't seem to get that to happen :(

If it's any consolation, I haven't got a clue what you're talking about.

(and in this thread too)

Do you mean you want to print a greyscale image in a halftone pattern, like this:
Image

Where the size of the dots gives the impression of the intensity of colour?
