I'm about to get in the bath and read Viz.

Does anyone else like Viz? I've not read it in ages, but this is the 30th anniversary issue and it's still as chucklesome as ever. I even understand all the jokes these days.

Viz.

I think it's awful how they make fun of people. It's like something Jim Davidson would write.

On that note, I found the 'Thieving Gypsy Bastards' strip to be the pinnacle. The Gypsy who sued Viz was later convicted of handling stolen goods :)

Oh, the lulz.

Viz is the only magazine I subscribe too.

Needless to say.. I think that it's great! I'm a big fan of the Drunken Bakers and of course, the letters page.

A free copy of Viz was given away with Your Sinclair in the days when YS had a bigger circulation than Viz did.

I used to subscribe. I have my own cuddly Roger Mellie who goes on top of the telly.

I once had a top tip published as well, but, you know, it's not as funny as it used to be.

I agree. And the art is awful. And the writers are from *Newcastle* ffs!

Nah, I've never read Viz. I guess I was too young and too skint to bother.

I love the Viz, read at Rixondale's who subscribes.

But really? Drunken Bakers? We just don't get it. We've tried from all angles, including Pinter and Beckett style existentialism piss-takes, but still - completely baffled. It's just terrible, we have reluctantly concluded.

I'd feel a bit cheated if I read a whole Viz and understood absolutely everything.

There's always been at least one strip in there which is completely baffling.

Might have a look for this.

It's not baffling as such in itself, it's just brazenly unfunny - and we can't work out why. I mean, it's so clearly not funny, it's as if at the height of the Fast Show they had one completely unfunny sketch each episode despite the talent - one not revolving around Arabella Weir, I mean.

Yes, but I'm fairly sure that's the joke. Did you ever see "Black Bag"?

Love Viz; my kids still get me the annual every Christmas - pretty much sums up my humour to a tee. I well remember crying with laughter at Lenny Left on the train back from an institute committee meeting in London a few years back, 'suited and booted' to the max, attracting disgusted looks from my fellow business commuters, each with their default Financial Times in hand. :D

I've still got the old Sid The Sexist video; always good to drag it out once in a while when the boys convene round mine for a few beers or ten. Gotta love those classic nightclub chat up lines:

... how pet, do you like jewelry? Suck my cock, it's a gem!

... do you like flowers?

/flops out knob

well, get your 'tu lips' around this then!

:hat:

Sounds pretty funny to me!

One of my personal faves, Big Vern. I have the mug to prove it :)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Vern

Quote:
In another strip, Vern and Ernie go to stay at a hotel. Vern is convinced that it is a prison, and after slopping out and decorating his room (which he believes is a cell) with pictures from pornographic magazines, he announces his intention of muscling in on the snout racket and denounces a fellow guest as a nonce "it could have been your kids Ernie, let me at him" etc etc. He then goes stir crazy and launches a rooftop protest, sitting on the roof of the hotel and demanding better conditions. The final prison stereotype shows Vern sodomising Ernie in the shower claiming that "he hadn't see a woman for a long time".

My pal subscribes to Viz so I read them round there :)

I've been trying to find the one with "The Adventures of Rolf Harris The Cat"* to see if it's actually as funny as I remember. Think it came from the early 90s. If anyone has it can you scan it for me plz?

Loved it ever since getting the first annual at age 12 on a visit to Glazzgae.

Vern is indeed a favourite ('Get dahn Ernie!'). Top Tips too (the Reeves and Mortimer video of it was horrendously shit, though).

Why does everyone who tries to "Glasgow" end up with something like this ?

(When it is of course "The toon" or "Glezga")

It's closer to fudge, but it's hard but crumbles a bit when you bite it. And it's the second sweetest thing I've ever eaten (after maple sugar candy)

Its probably as addictive , as can be seen from Oosters recipe its sugar , sugar , condensed milk (fat with sugar) , butter and sugar and strangely enough tastes quite sweet :-)

I love the wee Boy George or whatever it was called. Was a one off, I think.

He's obsessed with 'Golden Erses'

Hilariously the entire story is in scottish. His dad asks him to go and pick his kilt up from the dry cleaners, but George has other ideas..

"Stay away from the feckin erse shop !"

I love the adverts. I have one for some teddy bear serial killers, Little Ted West has me in stitches every time I see it.

And who can forget the classic "Clag Gone !" Leaves your gusset lemon fresh ! Winnits, Tagons, dangleberries? no problem !

I thought it was very Jim Davidson how they evilly made fun of Morrissey and his keeping daffodils in his breeks.

Yes, I myself recall the 'Going to the Toilet in 2000 A.D.' article; they had an image of an Apollo astronaut doing a spacewalk and something about 'silver winnets' and 'glittery farts'. Plus, said article was written halfway through 1999, if memory serves. :D

As for the adverts, I loved the one for the trousers - 'two, yes TWO belt hoops!!!!!', 4" or 5" inside leg options, and 'made with pure polyoxyamidecarboxyamelate - please buy 'em quick before our warehouse is blown to smithereens!'. LOL.
