As my old 2D thread attests I adore that there 2D platforming.

And nintendo have released a new version New Suoer Mario Bros Wii.

Having been on the side of Sega during The Great War of the 90s I've played all the Mario games unclouded with nostaliga and I can safely say that NSMBs (DS) is the best 2D Mario game out there. (and world is the worst).

This means I'm very excited about the new one.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS: The box is red and it has Wii written in 'shiny' on it. The manual has a very pretty retro-eque pattern on it.

Oh and I can't play it because I decided to hack my Wii ages ago before I stopped using it.

Anyone played it yet? I'm tempted to just strip the homebrew from my WIi, but I always think it might come in useful.

I'm more excited for this game than Activision's critically-acclaimed Call of Duty 6: Modern Warfare 2 ("a no-brainer purchase... doesn’t live up to the standard set by previous Call of Duty games" 9.5/10 - IGN) from Infinity Ward, the team who brought you Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (9.4/10 - IGN).

I've played it and its fun , in single player its basically the NSMB game from the DS now on the Wii , some nice backgrounds and moving things , and you get to ride on Yoshi
Difficulty level is okay (tough but fair in places) but there is still that old Mario problem of stocking up on extra lives (i had about 16 or so when i finished the first world)

Dr Lave wrote:
The irony being is that I bet the people who hack the wii and pirate don't have this problem. Boo.

All i had to do was update my USB loader to the latest one and it was fine.

Because when he puts it in it wants to update the firmware and other things on his Wii and if he does that he probably loses his homebrew stuff.

All i can suggest for that is pimpmywii and check that everything is up to date , and i'm sure there was a disk loader system which bypassed updates (but cant see it anywhere) , i suppose a further suggestion would be to use the USB loader to dump it to a USB drive and play it from there (rather than your original disk)

aha, you'll want startpatch then.

http://wiibrew.org/wiki/StartPatch

Stops games from being able too/trying to update your system. Plus a few other neat features.

I installed the update from the disc, and my homebrew channel is still there and working fine. When I go to the Shop it still asks me to perform a system update, though, so I am guessing the update on the NSMBW disc does not do a full system wide update anyway.

I have played it a bit, both 1 and 2 player, and I must say so far it has been a far better game than NSMB DS. There is a lot of funny new stuff right from the get go, and the big, wide screen seems to allow for much more interesting level design. It is also a lot prettier and better sounding, even if it looks similar in style. It is a very, very jolly game as well.

I don't think you have to be 'King of the Rose-tinted Nostalgia People' to believe that what you're saying about Super Mario World there is pretty horribly wrong. I'd genuinely love to hear why you think Super Mario Bros. 2 is a superior game.

Er, fair point, but point still stands cos Super mario 2 doesn't even count as a Mario game. It's a sprite swap with Doki Doki or something else.

So obviously excluded.

World is also better than lost levels though.

I'd like to hear why SMB 1 is better.

(I prefer World to 3 and Yoshi's, too, but I understand people preferring them.)

Got this on Friday. It is indeed lovely, both as a single player game and 4 player with the whole family. My kids are only 2 and 6 and they enjoyed it as much as me.

World is by far the best, and anyone who says otherwise is WRONG WRONG WRONG. Though it always annoys me when people totally dismiss Mario 2/USA "because it's a sprite swap of another game" when Doki Doki Panic was still made and designed by Shigeru Miyamoto anyway.

That, and I have a tattoo of the subworld potion on my arm.

Ok some quick thoughts. From Worst to best.

Mario Bros 2/ Doki Doki Panic - just tedious, I don't care if Myimoto made it.
Maro Bros 2 / Lost levels - there is hard, and there is hard and no fun. This swerves to the latter.
Super Mario World - Great game but; massive difficulty spikes throughout, too complicated switch/secrets system compared to other games. Getting out that circle on the map (in a forest with ghosts) is stupidly hard. Been stuck on a level right near the end for a year now. Only played GBA version mind. Crucially the physics is way off. Mario's too floaty and horrible to control. B
Super Mario Bros - The original and not the best, but superb. The tight physics makes jumps something you have to have sorted out before you jump, unlike floaty World.
Yoshi's Island - One of the most beautiful games ever, but a little by the numbers for the first world or so. Tightens up the controls from World.
Super Mario Bros 3 - Tremendous. Awesome physics. Making Bros more accessible but without going as far as World.
New Super Mario Bros - Tremendous. Perfectly pitched difficulty (though a little easy I guess for veterans) The 3 coins per level is a genius addition. Just enough content that it feels within your grasp, without the problems from having a greater number of collectable brings (99/100 and I can't find the last etc). Levels are small and tight and each does something different. The only 2D mario game that made got its claws into me until I 100%'d it.

Got NSMBWii working (via something called neogammer I think). Though it complains I don't have ISO259 whatever that is. But haven't played enough to judge it yet. So far, so wonderful though.

Same here. In fact, that was the first thing that sprang to mind re SMW's bestness. Playing that, then SMB or SMB3, makes the older games just feel leaden. Pelting through it, acceleration button held down, is the way to play it. ^_^

Unfortunately, the remakes of the NES games in Super Mario All-Stars had the inertia (or physics, if you prefer) "off", and they never felt right.

Having never played it, I have no idea if Super Mario Advance 4 (the remake of SMB3 on All-Stars converted to the Game Boy Advance) fixed the inertia, or if Super Mario Advance 2 (the remake of SMW for the GBA) has its' gameplay "feel" messed-up from the Super NES original. I hope someone here knows for definite. ;)

Same here. I still play SMW from time to time, lovely game.

Not a big fan of NSMBW I'm afraid - gets too hard and too frustrating way too fast for my gaming 'skills' (I use the term advisedly ;)).

Still, if people are up for a challenge and have the right skills and patience then go for it. :)

As much as I have always loved it, nothing can fill me with pure, incoherent, undistilled rage like Super Mario Bros. 3 can. Fuck me that game is soooo frustrating in places!

SMBW is, however, not just probably the best SMB game, but also possibly the best 2D platformer there has ever been. And I'm saying that as another who sat firmly on Sega's side of the fence for the entire time they were making hardware.

Is it worthwhile for someone who doesn't care about multiplayer?

World 2 is very close to perfect.

A perfect example of how to do a sort of spin off of a game series to prevent it from becoming stale, yet still retaining a lot of what makes it loved in the first place.

A perfect example of visual design that pushes technical boundaries, but also manages to look like no other game out at the time, and ages fantastically.

A very very good difficulty curve, that makes it fair, accessible and also has a lot of high end stuff for the geeks.

Great level variety, and damn fun to play.

It has a couple of ropey levels, but for the most part is fucking phenomenal.
