Possibly the most daft question on here.

Father in Law has bought a new Windows 7 PC with all the recovery info on a seperate partition. I'm not going there anytime soon, and I have not the patience to deal with him making a recovery disk backup (Mate in pub has told him to) over the phone when I've never actually made one myself, but know I could do it easily if I were there.

Question - is the recovery partition at risk from Viruses/other shit on the main drive, or will it only die as a result of catastrophic physical failure? Never thought to ask that question myself.

Tell him to phone whoever sold it to him and demand installation media. Dell are (or were) notorious for doing this.

It is indeed a Dell. They will send them then? Any big hassles?

I'm really lax at dealing with such shit, this is the second laptop I've had with no recovery media and not been arsed dealing with it.

I had to phone them a couple of years back - you (or he) will get through to India, but they were very helpful and the discs arrived promptly.

Good work, cheers.

Turns out it is an Acer rather than a Dell, but I'll point him that way.

They don't provide them any more (for the few laptops I hvave seen), but they do allow you to burn your own..

I wondered that the first time I saw it. As long as you've got Admin privileges you can change shit on it, so I'm not sure how much I'd trust it.

The Advent I got last year came with no install dvd either. Mind you, they did provide an app to make one and the shortcut was on the desktop so it was a painless affair :)
