UK retailer ShopTo has told Eurogamer that DJ Hero carries a suggested retail price of GBP 107.99. That came directly from Activision, we were told.

ShopTo snips that to GBP 94.85, for the game plus DJ turntable peripheral. It's a significant mark-up on the GBP 70 that Guitar Hero plus peripheral launched at here.

Frustratingly, DJ Hero will only cost Americans 120 dollars, according to GameStop - which translates to around GBP 73.

HMV, which offers DJ Hero for GBP 99.99, told Eurogamer it is "going with its own price on this". Other local retailers are yet to wade in.

Edit: Although having done some maths, that's not really a worse markup than most games get from the USA to the UK.

All this happened with the Rock Band set, remember, and then all the retailers heavily discounted it in the end. It was £160 RRP and most places had it for £130 when it finally shipped. Also, don't forget VAT; the US price works out to £85 when that is taken into account.

If people wish, I can ask a favour and see if I can get some discounted, to distribute in London on the 26th.

Also, I have come to the conclusion that this is a none story, but Eurogamer just wanted another excuse to link directly to shopto, since they get commission for sales that they send to shopto.

It was worse for Rock Band, because there was such a massive gap in time between the USA and the UK release, we got less bundle options, and there was a bigger gap in USA and UK price too.

The gap was a killer, yes, as someone who was rabid for the game from the second it was announced. The bundle options isn't quite fair though; at launch, we had the same options the US did at launch (i.e. the full band-in-a-box); the US didn't get individual instruments until a bit later, and the same thing happened here. Oh, and the game wasn't bundled in with the instruments, but that was because European retailers wanted more flexibility (the game was localised but the instrument pack wasn't).

The real scandal here is that we still can't fucking buy Rock Band 2 cunting instruments, but if I start that rant up again I'll derail this thread totally.

But how is it controlled? Please don't tell me you have to 'turn' the table with your fingers?

When's it out, late October? I'll still probably get it as I'll have built up about £65 of Green Travel Points by then.

I read the gameplay description on Wikipedia but I'm not sure I'm much the wiser for it. I think I'd have to see a video of it running. The guitar vs DJ mode sounds interesting; want to bet the Run DMC version of Walk This Way will feature?

Actually, I've been looking at the tracklisting and I'm less than impressed. I was hoping for some proper dance stuff, rather than remixed rock and pop songs.

Some of the home Beatmania controllers run into the hundreds but that's because they seem to be built to arcade standards. The DJ Hero one looks ok but still seems a fair old mark-up.

As for the gameplay vid, it doesn't look overly exciting - no more than Beatmania anyway.

God that gameplay vid makes it look dull and confusing.

Presumably in order to get suitably outraged, Eurogamer have completely ignored tax, included in our quoted price but not theirs.

The actual RRP for comparison is £93.90, and the cheapest online price £82.50, which is still a reasonable wedge less than the US RRP of £73, but then the exchange rate at its worst (which could well be roughly when they set this) leaves it at £88.23.

It's difficult to get discounts on this stuff in the US (Amazon prices at RRP) so actually the comparable price at which you can buy the damn thing before tax are £73 vs £82.50. More yes but not unreasonable given the currency fluctuations I'd say.

Realistically that'll feel like £120 to the Americans, whose min wage is the same as ours in dollars.

Just like the $65 pricetag on PS3 titles stings just as much when you live out there.

Minimum is lower yes (in some states), but the average income is higher in the US, by $10k.

I've no idea what that means for the actual average job person though, rather than CEOs and people at McDonalds.

EDIT : Actually only 2 US states have a lower $ than our £ min wage, and one of them increases dramatically in 5 months.

What's the point of this being a game? Why not just buy some real decks and/or professional DJ software and do it for real with whatever music you like?

I'm struggling with the concept myself.

Also, I'm sure the point in these kind of games is they are good for having mates round. Problem is
a) I'd be fucking embarrassed to show someone it
& b) how the hell are you supposed to pass that thing from sofa to sofa

Or maybe not pointless so much as "not fun". All these other novelty rhythm games, I knew I immediately wanted to play them. Donkey Konga is great fun because of the sheer visceral interface. Same thing for Rock Band's drums. Guitar Hero taps into anyone who's ever played air guitar. But this just seems baffling and, frankly, dull.

Rubbish. It taps into the market of people who have always wanted to touch a plate in an effeminate manner.

This is going back to my whole 'casual gaming is all about simulating everyday tasks' rant.

I can't go out and chainsaw aliens in half. Nor can I go, stab some passersby and then throw their corpses at the cops before shooting the cop with his own gun and get away with it (well, give the UK a few more years...). I also can't fly a spacefighter against more evil aliens, travel to distant planets, fight the Nazis or kill supermutants.

So, instead, I play Gears of War 2, Saints Row 2, Project Sylpheed, Mass Effect, Call of Duty 3 and Fallout 3.

But being a DJ isn't some incredibly dangerous, impossible-to-reach fanciful dream. It's something that you could be doing within a day of deciding to do it - just go down to HMV and buy a set of decks and some Fatboy Slim White Label 12" Remixs (or whatever) and a set of really big headphones. Or hell, just install some DJ software on your computer and spin virtual decks. But then you'd be doing it FOR REAL. As opposed to pretending to, with a simplistic game structure hastily stapled onto it.

I'll be waiting for Steel Drum Hero or Theremin Hero

Bring on Vanessa Mae's Violin Hero. And Myleene Klass Classical Piano Hero. And you can connect the games together to play a duet! And then Myleene and Vanessa connect their minges together!
