EDIT: This month's theme is WATER

Here's how to take part:

1]Take a picture, based on the theme (think direct, think laterally - it doesn't matter - it's your idea and creativity that people are looking forward to seeing)

2]Upload it anonymously to the Picasa account (obviously, don't call it 'Mimi's picture of water' or anything too obvious)

3]Try not to make it too obvious that a picture is yours in particular by announcing your upload, etc.

Hello Happy Snappers!

In this thread I bought up a few ideas as to how to make the photography challenge go a bit smoother and people seemed to be in agreement. If it were to be fortnightly as people had agreed i thought it best to get the second photography challenge off the ground yesterday, so I PM'd Grim... three or four days ago asking if he'd set his random member generator into action. Well, wouldn't you know, it turns out that Grim... happens to have a life outside Betty-Oh! (the bounder), so I propose to set the 'Mimi random-poster-generator' into action (which will almost certainly rely on me clicking on a random page in the members list and jabbing my finger at the screen). I just wanted to check that no-one had any objection to this before doing so, as it would be good to keep the ball rolling.

So, I suggest a submission date of the 4th of May, at which time a poll lasting a week shall be put up and a new subject chosen.

I also, after discussion in the above thread, set up a Picasa Web, the sign-in details are below:

Image

When a subject has been chosen by the random member I will start a folder with that title in the Picasa album for people to upload their shots to - this way voting remains anonymous and the person who lists the poll (I would be happy to do it if people are OK with that) will upload all of the anonymous photos for voting.

Does this sound like and am I OK to randomly generate a poster?

Sounds awesomo to me. Get that random generator rolling! Can't wait to get snapping away with my Fujifilm 5600.

And remember folks, it's not unusual for those who run the competition, to win the competition itself. So don't be surprised if that happens, from time to time. (Looks sideways nervously)

Excellent news. I will either fix my camera, arrange for it to be fixed, or buy another!

I have spent hundreds of pounds on cameras and still don't have one that works.

:(

Excellent stuff, but booooooo to non-working cameras :( What camera is it? Some manufacturers do reconditioned cameras with the same warranty as a brand new one, worth looking out for as they are often far cheaper.

(I am waiting for 'random member' to get back to me - they are a regular poster so hopefully we'll have a subject soon ^_^)

The digital one is a new (Xmas new) Canon Ixus that lasted precisely six days in my loving hands before I accidentally dropped it in a glass of wine on New Years Eve. I dried it out and it started working fine again, but since then it has slowly stopped working again, with the buttons on the sonsole on the right doing nothing and the battery working intermittently. I can occasionaly shoot pictures, but always with the red-eye reduction on, etc.

Previously my Olympus XA and Lomo LC-A cameras both died for no apparent reason, though both involved the winding mechanism in different ways.

And I can never get the exposure right with my silly Holga camera.

I might have to drag out the antique SLR camera that I don't know how to work and bought for pennies on eBay...

I'm gonna have to wait at least another year for my new camera now Image

This all seems to be getting a bit complicated now, but the date on the first post seems to be in the past?

Oops - that was supposed to read 'May' not 'March', as in the title.

not very complicated.

The theme will be announced (hopefully later today)

Take a picture that you think reflects the theme.

Upload it to the Picassa account.

4th of May a poll will be made.

Vote in the poll if you want to.

Winner will be announced May 11th.

Ta-da!

Wait, I didn't fully read all the other threads. Are there any specific rules? Like photoshopping - allowed for minor corrections or totally forbidden? And cropping? Guidelines for acceptable resoultions? etc etc (this may have been discussed but missed by me).

I may well enter this with a photo I already have from holiday last year.

I was under the impressions (possibly false) that we were meant to take new photos specifically for this?

Also whats the rules on photo shopping? Limit to colour and stuff? Or full editing madness?

New photos only - this is supposed to inspire people to get out with a camera, there's no point entering otherwise as you don't win anything.

I have no issues with mild photoshopping, but others might.

Mild being the word.
I have no problem with very mild editing but complete photoshopping would be a tad unfair imo.

Again, fair is largely irrelevant - because there's nothing to win.

I still figured it would be kept within the realms of fair, surely, prize or no prize? Image

I doubt anyone will spend hours on Potatoshop perfecting a picture to win the BETEO pic of the fortnight...

That's my point - many consider post-editing to be an important part of photography. Let people be creative, under the general heading of photography.

A fair point, shame though as I did take a lovely one of a waterfall in Australia that I rather liked (maybe it's more of a show and tell sort of thing instead).

Being around SW London, I'll have to think of something else.....

I really like the first one. Blue filter?
Second is a nice shot but seems a little bright/harsh.

I'm sure an artfully-lit shot of a simple glass of water, resting on a simple wooden table could win points.

Although your London water is a bit funny isn't it, so maybe not.

Both were taken with my Olympus XA. No Photoshopping/touching up etc.

1 - The blue comes from cross-processing.

2 - Yeah, it was really, really bright that day (in Croatia). I should probably tone it down a little :)

In reply to the question about using past pictures - I don't think that any particular 'rules' as such were bought up in the past threads about this (or, indeed, the photoshopping issue). Personally, it doesn't bother me either way, though I do agree that this is a nice way to inspire people to take photographs of subjects that they might not otherwise have thought of. At the end of the day there is no 'prize' at the end, so it's just a bit of fun and something that might bring the community together in some mutual appreciation of each other's ideas.

I'm just a little concerned that someone who has spent 30 years building up a bloody good collection of photos will likely be able to just type the theme into their photoshop library or whatever they use and just upload whatever they find.

EDIT - obviously banning it is pointless, but I'd rather see people getting inspired to go out and get creative.

Yes, I agree with you, Craster. I'll be taking some new photos (just got back from the park now, actually), but it's really up to people. I'd rather see new pictures around the theme, but I don't want to be the Photography Thread Dictator. What do others think about it? Does anyone have a particular wish to use photos they'd taken in the past?

Well, the obvious answer is to have a seperate thread called something like 'Proud Pics of BETEOS', or 'The People's Pics' if you're sick in the head. This thread can include pics past and present that we like and just wanted to fling up there, with an invitation to comment and general blabbery on photography. That way we can have a competition and a relaxed photo-thread to please us all. :D

Edited to translate it back into recognisable English

Oooh, a glass of murky brown shit-water resting on those hideous coasters my mother in law brought back from Cyprus for us. It's a sure fire winner - and a new photo too :hat:
