Okay, you'll no doubt be all shaking your heads in a sadly amused fashion but are there any airlines out there left that actually have tickets priced at even vaguely the prices they advertise on sites such as http://www.cheapflights.co.uk/flights/P ... tl/London/ ? For example?

I ask because the previous two years I got the tickets that were advertised at the price they were advertised through phone deals. Around £325 and £365. And through obviously UK located travel agent centres. Now I'm being diverted to clearly-India and am being quoted the most breathtakingly over-the-advertised prices I thought conceivable.

Yes, you're right. I don't fly often...

Flying Eagles - (who I've used before at £325 two years ago) - Advertised £382 phoned up and its £485.

Abacus Travels: £349 - £492

Economy Travels: £369 - £558!

And I've tried another two on top of that. I think it's going to be a long evening...

If anyone is stultifyingly bored and feels brotherly feel free to point me in certain directions. Flying out 24th October and coming back 14th November - dates are flexible by a few days.

Meanwhile - rrrrgh.

Fly BA.

They are the best and then you don't have to worry.

They also cost at least twice as much. :(

Where are you flying to?
Fly with the national airline... they usually don't charge you extra for luggage and you.can carry more.

In my experience Virgin are much better. BA aren't all they've cracked up to be.

I agree with Myp.

Also, Virgin's staff are sexier.

The staff on Norwegian were rather sexy.
The staff on Viking were less sexy.

MaliA, I'd say Mr Kissyfur has hacked your account.

As for the original question, just go to the websites of the main carriers. Cheap flights from the bucket shops sellers generally aren't. If you have to go to an agent, just call Trailfinders.

Air Canada is £396 if I go Monday instead of the Sunday. Means cutting a day off the hols but hmm... tempting. AS long as I don't end up sharing a flight with Terrence & Phillip. AH HA HA! Those cheaky uncle-fuckas!

My Oregon buddies will be picking me up from the airport, which is nice. But they've also floated the idea of me staying with friends of theirs for a night in Portland, so I can go round town. I don't know 'em, but it is tempting.

Tried Virgin on your advice. Their flight booking page doesn't list Portland as a destination. Damn strange.

I don't know about prices but if you want to speak to a human in England, HolidayHypermarket.co.uk is your friend. Just ring the number at the top of the site and you'll be talking to people who understand you.

For long haul BA are really still very good, especially as terminal 5 is actually excellent these days, as far as terminals can be. For business I always use them, but with my own money I just use whatever is cheapest!
I usually check out http://www.kayak.co.uk/ and http://www.expedia.co.uk/

I use that too. Cheapest it gives for this is around 440 or so, though.

£396 still the cheapest, then. It goes via Vancouver airport. Anyone know if I need a visa to transfer? I don't think I will with my Brit passport, but I'd better check. Got my Visa Waiver applied for when it comes to America, so that part's okay.

I'll buy that ticket tomorrow lunch, I reckon. Got a mate to let me crash down in London the night before, so that'll save some pennies anyway. Cheers, y'all!

Alwright! Bought my tickets!

£396 one via Air Canada in the end. Get there on the 25th October, leave there on the 15th November. Almost got away with no human reaction but got a call for a verbal confirmation. Shame it came from (gngh) a largely incomprehensible Indian lady from the sub-continent who rattled through all the details with nary a pause for breath and punctuated every sentence with a "CORRECT?!?" at the end without a pause for me to reply.

Still, made myself understood, and the details were correct - despite the awkward repetition of me going, "Sorry, speak slower?" and "Again, please?"

Got the e-tickets. Now I stare at the calender Dougal style.

Cool. I did try our company but we don't list Portland as a destination.

Come to think of it, the "CORRECT!?!" hi-speed, hi-pitch, other-accented phone conversation was exactly like that bit in Star Trek: The One with the Whales where Spock gets quizzed by that computer that bombards him with questions. :S
