Just found this on another forum:

http://scanwichita.com:8000/

It opens in iTunes and is a live stream from a scanner on Wichita Police frequency. Freaky stuff.

edit:

Loads more here: http://www.dxzone.com/catalog/Internet_ ... _Scanners/

Ever so slightly close to topic:

One of the highlights of Saturday night in Nottingham was hearing the irate taxi controller over the cab radio complaining that he 'couldn't find car four-oh-four'.

/nerd.

Funnily enough, I suspect that was also the time.

when I was at school (a long time ago now) I had a small portable AM radio, and you could tune it into the local police radios. It was fun, but now they've all gone encrypted digital :(

I was going to post about that. It was ace. Ours used to be on FM, roughly where (I think) Radio 1's national FM frequency currently resides. A few years ago I could tune into a local taxi rank's radio if I moved the FM dial to the very start, just before Radio 2.

This is ace :)
I was able to listen to my local police on my scanner, when I was a teenager. They never once said anything interesting. These Wichita cops sound real busy right now!

Fire up this youtube vid in the background for a complete Cop overdose:

I could be wrong, but I think baby monitors are capable of picking up taxi radios if they're nearby.

Anything with an amplifier in it will reproduce AM transmissions if it's close enough, and the shielding not particularly good. I haven't noticed effects like that for a while though so I think there's hardly anyone left using AM transmitters (and I'm pretty sure they're no longer legal). That plus EMC requirements anyway.

The suspect has been sighted south of the liquor store, btw.
