Do as the title suggests. It's like playing excite truck but with quad bikes, and a landscape that looks some what like sega rally. Reasonably not brown. Pretty landscapes. Big jumps into the air, to do tricks, to earn boost to go fast.

And doesn;t seem plastered with ads (unless they are advertising quad bike stuff - but then how would I know).

I really liked it.

Though apparently you can tune your brum brum bike, so unless it has a "make best" button that might ruin it for me.

Probably is, but I haven't played those games, so I couldn't say.

It was very brum-brum-jumpy-with-minimum-take-finger-off-go-fast-button. Which checks all the boxes on my list.

you've never played a ssx? go get ssx3 right now, well if its backwards compatible.

anyway in other racing news have you seen the video for fuel?

huge landscape to drive through in stupidly daft weather conditions like motherfucking tornadoes.

I've never like snowboarding/skating games - thats why I was worried that pure might be too 'tricky' but it seems basic enough.

Couldn't see the kotaku link, but looked it up on youtube and it looks good. Bit worried by it being open world though. I don't get why that always equates to better.

This has reminded me how much I love excite truck. I might have to bust that out again, to try and finish that last damn race.

It does look remarkably like SSX. With a healthy mix of motorstorm. But without the latters randomly exploding cars.

It does look remarkably Excite Truck-y.
Also, your warning really needs to be bigger, and be before the video.

I kept falling off my quad bike thing every five seconds for no fathomable reason. Still fun though.

looks a lot like MX vs ATV which is actually a pretty good game and has loads of different vehicles to play with.

It got a Eurogamer 8/10. Might have to pick this up as well, then. Annoyingly, they're doing that thing again where they say the game is a "good platform" for the future, essentially encouraging mindless sequels that tweak games to make them a bit better instead of, say, making something new and original (like Pure actually is). Expect Pure 2, 3, 4 and REVENGE in the near future.

Mercs 2 has a halftrack motorbike with guns on. I'd like to see Pure beat that.

Kind of speaking about SSX games, I picked up Tricky for the 'Cube for £3 due to the love for it on this board.

Thats exactly what I thought too. Eurogamer frustrates me more and more. I am becoming a curmudgeon.

Really glad that they said you just autocomplete your bikes and forget the building nonsense. GOOD I SAY.

Yeah, I'd be more tempted to get MX vs ATV just to have something other than quad bikes to zip around on.

Of course, I'm also still waiting for a proper sequel to Sled Storm (yes, I know there was a PS2 remake). A huge, freeroaming world a la Burny Pee would be ideal for this sort of thing.

I picked this up from Moggies (£33) on the way home on Friday.

It's really rather good you know. The comparisons with SSX are well founded and the risk/reward mechanic of the stunts and boost bar is very well managed. The vehicles feel right in general and you never feel like some shitty physics calculation has ripped you off a la Flatout Ultimate Carnage. However, like that game there is the occasional bit of debris on the track that can unfairly fuck your run up but it's never game breaking although it can cause multi-swears in Freestyle mode when you are trying to rack up a combo.

In the last week I've got this, Lego Star Wars 2 (£10 From Currys,) Beautiful Katamari (ditto) and Unreal Tournament III (trade in bonanza at Gamestation) to work my way through but Pure has stayed in the tray the longest despite me buying it last.

So kids, which off-road racing game should you buy?

Pure, MX vs ATV or Baja?

Don't forget Colin McRae DiRT... I'd never heard of Baja until I saw it advertised on the dashboard. Is it an arcade style game or more realistic?

A bloke playing SBK earlier described 'Bah-jah' as being 'one of those games that plays you.'

I believe he meant in the 'deadly hard' sense, not the 'Soviet Russia' sense. He also made comments to the effect of 'you have to finish the championship before you can play online, and the championship is bastard hard'.

I believe it's more sim than arcade, they billed it as the "Gran Tourismo of off-road", at which point I lost interest.

I think I'll pencil it onto my Christmas list, though...

Eurogamer said that they never bothered with that, and just pressed the "make best stunt bike" or "make best race bike" buttons occasionally.

That put me off the game till I realised you never ahd to do it.

Definitely no rubberbanding so far (up to tier 5 in world tour mode) to the extent that once you've built up a lead it's only through getting cocky and trying special tricks over tiny jumps that you can get caught. Conversely once you have fucked up catching up to the rest of the pack is both exciting and joypad smashing at the same time as you risk a stupid stunt to get the extra boost you need only to crunch face first into the ground and have no hope of winning.

Snagging yourself on a AI rider in the early stages of a race is probably the most annoying part so far.

Why haven't any of you cunts bought this yet?

This is now easily in my top 3 games this year - much deeper than you initially think and the experimentation with both multiple routes and ATV configuration lead to a considerably larger game than the ostensibly short 10 stage World Tour.

I've got loads of games I've negelected and need to whore out the points on, but it's on my "will buy when I've done some other games and it's got a bit cheaper" list.

Trousers' Glowing recommendation is all that it's taken to mean that I'll get this. But I don't think I can afford anything new till Xmas I'm afraid. and if I have to choose between this and Mirrors Edge then it might have to wait longer.

But T-dawg - is the tuning nessecery or can you just bypass it?

You can completely skip it even when you get new parts by scrapping your existing and bike and quick building a new one (involves holding down X for Race or Y for Freestyle). It automatically drops in the newly acquired upgrades - if you want, you can then fiddle with the parts to increase the handling stats at the expense of your tricking ability etc.

I'm up to tier 9 in the world tour now and it almost made my head explode scanner-style yesterday when I was coming 1st on the final lap of a race and boosted off a jump that you really really shouldn't use boost on, so landed about an inch away from the lip of the next jump. I then crawled to the top of the jump at milk float speeds and fell into a chasm. Only I landed on the lip so the game didn't respawn me for a couple of seconds and I sunk to 9th in a split second. There was RAGE. Mainly at myself for boosting over a jump that I knew would fuck me up but also at the game for not realising the only place I could drive was into a huge fuck off ravine.

One thing I would mention though is once you get to about tier 5/6 it really does start to get a lot harder - the freestyle and sprint races maybe require a couple of restarts but the straight up races need you to find the right route and really tussle with the AI riders. Makes winning that bit more special of course but it's certainly not for the faint of heart.

I've got it, and I seem to have found a difficulty spike at the start of class C which is putting me off it. It's good, but the races are a bit long for my liking. I like the sprint tracks, though.

As I'm practically dry humping the box about how good this game is I have decided to take positive action.

I have one race to go in the World Tour and that will be finished tonight apart from hoovering up any fun* achievements I have missed which should also be done tonight.

So what I will do is make with the lending to someone who has expressed an interest but is either skint/has totally wrong priorities about playing other shittier games. Please note down hear if you want a borrow and I will send it off to you for a couple of weeks so you can join my love-in.

HEY HEY - here's an idea - whoever in the opinion of the judges (ME) completes the following in 10 words or less gets it.

"I should win a holiday with Kellogg's Conflakes because"....**

Thank you for listening.

* - i.e. the triple flip in one jump which I made by the slightest of margins and was in air punching territory when it came off.
** - This is an entirely original competition concept and if you don't believe me then fuck you.

triple flip

How do you do flips? Do you need a special bike, or is a special button combination? I can't do them (or spins) at all :(

You can go it with any bike (although I would go for one with decent trick stats) - it's Up then Up again (holding) for a front flip or down then down again (holding) for a back flip.

Definitely worth doing as a single flip on an "A" trick will fill your boost up enough for you to do a "B" trick on the next jump. Also doing a double flip and another trick at the same time during a Freestyle race will get you up to a 3x multiplier in one go.
