My fave is Morissons (sic).

I don't have that much choice but I have found.

Tescos is more expensive and their own brand stuff is shit. Inc their donuts with the tiny dollop of jam. Their lunchmeats also suck frontbums. They also recently changed their Diet Cola into something resembling dish water. I have no idea why.

Sainsburys is too expensive.

I don't have access to an Asda but I do remember them kicking ass.

So I personally prefer Morissons (sic).

I do use Iceland but I won't count that because they don't supply everything like the others do.

Choices time !

Oh. I go to Sainsburys when I'm feeling too poor for Waitrose. Maybe I'm a snob.

Favourite is Booths, specifically Booths in Keswick. However that's 60 odd miles away so we normally just go to Asda.

Tesco to shop, because it's the biggest round here. Sainsbury's for delivery, because they're the best round here. When I win the lottery, Waitrose and M&S.

I used to. But it's becoming ever more apparent that Tesco are a complete fucking bolt up and their own branded stuff is shite. Morissons donuts are bloody lovely because they are filled all the way through with yummy jam. They also do a mean pate including a wonderful duck liver and orange one. mm mm mm !

Apparently we are getting an Asda next year. It'll be about 9 miles away but hey, only have to go one a fortnight.

I swear Mr Chris posted that when I first read it. Perhaps it's just because it's the sort of thing I'd expect him to say. ;)

According to my copies of the Grocer magazine (no, really), Sainsbury's is often a bit cheaper than Tesco. Tesco trades on being very cheap, but actually isn't.

Waitrose and Sainsburys for food, Morisson's for beer, now they've opened one in Nailsworth.

If you're hoping for Asda to be an improvement over Tesco, you'll be sadly disappointed.

I have to drive 15 miles to the supermarket. Which is why I normally get stuff delivered. Also, it's much easier to budget properly when you have your stuff delivered. I get more food and spend less money.

I've never been into a Waitrose but I didn't know they were expensive tbh. Always thought they were one of the cheapies.

I buy a lot of raw ingredients, veggies, fruit, meats etc and for all of those Morissons were far cheaper and better tasting than Tesco.

I do use M&S once in a while for things that are complex to make or just not worth it, like the stuffed Yorkshire puddings with steak and ale. God those are yummy.

Iceland do a great toad for £1. And I like it most because it has skinny sausages (don't like the big fat ones they're either grissly, fatty or soggy inside).

Get get stuff delivered from Ocado (Waitrose), and buy lovely food from M&S.

I also pick up odds and sods from Tesco and Somerfield on the way home from work when needed.

I get an optional free ride to Tesco once a week. I usually go, just for their scented mineral cat litter @ around £4 a bag. I don't do the clay shit as it's awful. Saves me lugging it all back on the train.

I find it disgraceful that people can shop at Waitrose during these times. Don't you know there's a recession on!?

How could you possibly leave Tesco out of the poll?

edit: But any way. The Sainsbury's here is a little bit small and I worked there for five years, so I prefer the MEGATESCO, which has EVERY FUCKING THING. I don't care about price because I piss my money away for fun and struggle to survive on next to no money for the second half of the month. It's more fun like that.

At the moment I struggle to survive on next to no money for the first half of the month and then have to survive on actually no money for the second half. It's not as fun.

In order of quality and price, it's basically:

Waitrose/Marks (is Marks a supermarket? It doesn't really have much in the way of ingredients)
Morrisons
Tesco
Asda
Lidl/Aldi

Sainsbury's, because it's that bit closer than Tesco's for me.

And I also pop into the Co-op for essentials as it's 3 minutes' walk from me but all the happy-clappy-lets-all-save-the-world-together stuff they decorate the store with annoys me.

You'd put Morrisons near the top? I always thought it was a bit gammy for food, personally.

They used to do the best instore pizza, too. That service seems to have disappeared from around here, though.

Anyway, a tin of Branston beans is a tin of Branston beans whereever I buy it from. They're not that gammy.

When I meant gammy, I thought they were on a par with Asda, basically. I personally prefer going to Morrisons, but Mrs C likes going to Tesco which is furthest away.

Thinking about it, it might be because it's cheaper. She is a tight northerner.

Asda for me. As it's the only decent, big supermarket in Caerphilly. There's two Tescos here but they're both arse, there's a Morrisons but unfortunately it's filled with the sort of people who shop at Morrisons, and the nearest Sainsbury's is infested with coffin dodgers shuffling along and standing across the aisles discussing loaves of bread.

In Asda you get:
-a decent selection of stuff (good)
-scummy mummys smacking their kids around (good, for entertainment value)
-a reasonable assortment of housewares and crockery, and decent clothes (good)
-nothing extraordinary or worth going out of your way for apart possibly from the fresh curry (bad)

In Tesco you get:
-another decent selection of stuff (good)
-scumbag students (bad)
-far too many people making finding something you've not bought before a pain (bad)
-terrible own-brand food (bad)

In Sainsbury's you get:
-some excellent, obscure food you won't find easily elsewhere such as the lemon-roasted macadamia nuts, or the pastrami (good)
-higher than average prices (bad)
-daft old bats who always shopped at J. Sainsbury ever since it were the war, you know (bad!)
-Jamie 'Fat-Tongued Mockney Cunt' Oliver's stupid mush plastered on everything. (bad)

In Morrisons you get:
-the brilliant Market Street section of fresh cooked pastries, pies, bhajis, chickens, and more (good)
-possibly the best beer selection of all supermarkets (good)
-poison dwarves (bad)
-council estate customers who think it's dead posh compared to Netto (bad)
-"you must be at least this minging to work here" (bad)

In Marks and Spencer you get:
-the best ready meals ever (good)
-some truly excellent sandwiches and crisps for lunch (good)
-hell, almost all their own stuff, from chocolates and milkshakes and sauces to colas, candies and booze are excellent (good)
-but it's expensive (bad)
-fucking expensive (bad)
-and even more expensive (bad)

In Iceland you get:
-big bags of nice frozen stuff, if that's your thang (good)
-filthy emo checkout girls (good)
-it was endorsed by Kerry Katona, what do you think? (bad)

Haven't spent enough time in Waitrose or Somerfield to really comment. And Budgens is for Londony cunts only so there's little point going into its myriad flaws.

I remember years ago they were cheap by far (their potted trifles were half the price of Sainsburys and far nicer) but I am probably expecting Walmart. Which yes, will leave me dissapointed.

Asda are definitely not Walmart except partly in name. There's a massive Asda Walmart in Long Eaton and it's just a big Asda.

Their bakery is magical. No doubt about it. Their donuts are just superb too, being that they are the only jam donuts I can find in this day and age that contain jam with every bite. Well, maybe not jam but a lovely sticky tasty syrup stuff with some strawberry seeds.

Also this, blueberry muffins. Morissons are INCREDIBLE. Tesco? Eeeeyuck. Taste like mouthful of wet blueberry flavoured dough with fake blueberries. Shit, tbh.

Absolutely 100% have the best bakery of all the supermarkets I have used. Their fresh breads are lovely aswell.

When I am a poor student:
Lidl/Asda

Lidl do fucking delicious pasta, 75p a pack. Asda is nearby. Morrison's sometimes too, since the Morrison's near me is really good.

When my parents are paying:
Sainsbury's or Tesco'ses

Morrisons is closest, with Sainsbury's, ASDA and Aldi being equally as far, and Tesco being miles away aside from a small Tesco Express if you're desperate on a Sunday*.

I'm not sure I prefer any of them wholly over the others. I like the mean from Sainsbury's, the bagels from Tesco, and cooking ingredients from Morrisons. Morrisons sell Daim Cake, too, which is always a plus. And their doughnuts, as JC said, are lovely. Especially the boxes of mini chocolate-coated ones.

*why do we still have these daft trading laws? The supermarkets are practically open all the time anyway — my brother stacks shelves at night to put him through college; there's always someone in the store, even if customers aren't. The local Morrisons is open longer than the legal six hours on a Sunday, too, except you can only actually buy your goods from 11-5pm. Absolutely ludicrous.

Last year, one pound in every seven spent was spent at Tesco. Think about that for a second.

Also a big shout out to Iceland's duck legs in orange sauce with slices of orange, yo. At £3.50 they're super awesome.

They were superb at Walmart out in the states, too. $4 got you something you would have to turn sideways to get through the door.

On pizzas though again it's Morissons. They do a margerita (sic? fuck knows) that when a can of lump crabmeat is applied to the top and baked for 8 mins = heaven.

No manky fucking ricotta on it either like the Co-op ones.

I want some Morrisons mini doughnuts now. How much cycling do you reckon I'd have to do to negate the effects?
