I have a UK driving licence but do not currently drive due to living in a city where I cycle everywhere. As such, I do not currently have any form of car insurance.

If I were to go on holiday in summer and rent a car, how does this work? Does the car rental include it's own insurance?

Yup. In 99% of cases, anyway. Same as if you rent a car in the UK.

It's very easy, just phone up or do it online and they'll ask you everything that they need to know.

Yes, it almost certainly will include insurance. It's worth checking the level of cover though to make sure you are happy and confident with the insurance offered, and the price thereof.

If it's a photocard driving licence, you'll need the paper counterpart too.

Remember to check what condition they want you to return the car in (almost always with a full tank), and what times the checkin/out desk are open if you are getting there or flying out at odd times. And make a note of where you drop the car off before you drive away, sometimes it is not always that obvious. Pretty simple stuff, but easy to overlook with the excitement of a holiday.

It is really easy.

And check the seat for needles and razor blades. Foreign drivers always stuff the seats with needles and razor blades.

Oh, and if it's offered, ALWAYS pay for the Collision Damage Waiver. It's usually a pitiful amount and stops you having to pay out an excess in the event that you do have an accident.

and check with your travel insurance, they always try to sell you cover you already have..

check for a good deal also if some give a discount for your hotel or your airline
