I had a yellow jumper like that minus the design. I ruined it by getting tar on it when visiting the tar tunnel in Ironbridge in 1990.

If you are really sad you can find out the precise day this happened as it was the day the ITV Telethon was on as they were doing some kind of world record for the longest line of pennies across the bridge.

That is all.

Don't be so coy, Chinster, I'm sure you could tell us off the top of your head.

PS buy a 360

I was on the ITV telethon, too! I accidentally hit someone (I think maybe Gloria Hunniford, but it may have been Angela Rippon or someone similar) in the face. The thing I remember most was the amazing drinks machine in the green room.

I honesty can't remember but it may well have been May Bank Holiday as I'm pretty sure they used to run the Telethon from Sunday into the Monday.

Just watched a few clips online to see if I could find a date. Found it depressing how you could see all the proud local ITV companies all putting on a show from their own local facilities. How times change.

I'd rather just have BBC local news rather than bastardise the BBC to pay for shitty Jed Pitman or whoever to do crap-arse ITV news.

Fuck ITV. Competition isn't important unless you believe in the market.

Or the meerkat. I forget which it is.

Two things.

First of all having a strong local ITV news ensures the BBC local news need to keep their game strong. Can't speak for TV, but I worked for two rival radio stations, one commercial and one BBC. Believe you me, both monitored the other and what they were up to.

But news isn't what I'm so concerned about. What concerns me is the lack of investment in original high quality programming. A strong ITV is important for the BBC because it keeps the Beebs game up. There's countless examples across 40 years + of the BBC having to react to what ITV was up to.

So we've gone from an organisation made up of of several strong regional companies and some smaller companies into one huge and very weakened company.

And no I don't believe that ITV should get license payers cash. ITV shouldn't be bailed out for its own (or the governments in terms of the 1990 broadcasting act) fuck ups. You had all these profitable individual companies who specialised in certain things and did them very well and it all got fucked up. Screw it, let them go down because something will rise in its place.

That may have been a relevant argument in the 80s, but the Beeb has countless rivals other than ITV - the majority of traditional TV watchers have SKY, Freesat, Cable or whatever.

Thanks ITV

So aside from rubbish phone vote 'talent' programs, can we also blame ITV for 'reality shows' and similar shite?

So what? You can have 1000 channels, the fact is no fucker is watching most of them. Even Sky 1 (the top rated commercial "digital" channel) commands a tiny 1.2% audience share compared to ITV's 14.8% (which excludes the time delayed version and ITV 2, 3 and 4).

So ITV is still by far the BBC's biggest rival. The digital channels do in total have a larger share than ITV, but there are hundreds of them, most of which attract a few hundred thousand individual viewers a week compared to ITV's 34 million.

The BBC is indeed very interested in the total effect of the digital channels, but no individual in there is any kind of threat. It's still ITV that is by far the biggest rival.

It was the BBC who introduced phone voting in Opportunity Knocks. And ITV ran New Faces. Talent shows aren't anything new in the history of TV, they just went out of fashion for abit.

The purpose of TERROR FISH BOY is to be waiting, staring at your face, as soon as you wake up, and then to sneak up and stare at you until you turn slightly and see it and leap with shock. All day, every day.
