Be Excellent To Each Other

I have near-total recall for minutiae and have spent a long time tracking down obscure data for a living, but a couple of films I half-remember seeing still elude me.

The first was a crappy, Escape From New York/No Escape knock-off from the early-to-mid nineties which I saw on TV once. This guy gets sent to an off-world penal colony where the prisoners are abandoned and left to the mercy of the Mad Max-style natives. An old lag helps him survive, but then manages to ingratiate himself into the Mad Maxers, who terrorise the surviving prisoners and the planet's civilians. Our hero is some kind of hydraulic engineer who improves the lives of the native civilian populace before leading them in a battle against the Mad Maxers, now led by his former friend.

The other is a black and white (I think) film set over a single night in a boxing arena, mostly in the dressing room as I recall. It's sort of a portmanteau piece intertwining the various fighters' stories. The chief character, who may be fighting for the last time in the presence of his fiancée, is killed in the final bout. That's as much as I remember.

No idea what the second one is though

First one really sounds like No Escape. The only other one I can think of is Fortress.
