I swear one day I'll find a decent proxymizer that work/course admins haven't already blocked. They can't have blocked every single one of them.

Suggestions? Maybe they need to use more obscure names so that their purpose isn't too obvious...

If it's that important to you, get your own connection.
If it's important to your work, ascend the megaboss stack until you get acceptable results.
If it's not that important, it can wait.

:this:

Bear in mind that using a proxy to access blocked sites could potentially be a disciplinary offence. It certainly is where I work, anyway.

I found out that Opera had an "ignore windows proxy settings" or something option which was able to bypass my works web filtering.

However I stopped using it because of the lack of working getting done and there was something about Opera that the more I used it the worse it became, the little things started to add up.

Uh - really? You've got some confused network admins then. The whole point of the proxy is that it should really be the only way to route outbound from the general network.

Yep, if I ignore the proxies here I'll not be able to get anywhere.

Funnily, I got a call from the network admins on monday that basically went: "The proxy server is fucked, it's summer, there's no-one here, so it's staying off". So no proxy for me for a while.

Yup, don't know how it worked but it did. The PC goes though the works web proxy, which is fixed in windows and you can't change it. However Opera has a setting (it was even a menu option, not some hidden tick box) that ignores the windows set proxy.

Your lazy admins have forgotten a firewall rule.

I do all my web browsing via an SSH tunnel to my webserver. Half the company here uses an unofficial proxy run by one of the junior guys in tech services. All a bit of a giggle really.

I would subtly approach the subject with a friendly IT guy. And then I wouldn't do it.

Get a job in the IT department, then the rules don't apply to you.

If any boss type complains, screw them over by taking the token out of their LAN connection and dropping it down an air vent.

No, you want a job in the network admin department. THEN the rules don't apply. All other IT types are still Orwell'd round these parts.

Unless you, like, don't log into novell....

Intriguing. I'm currently using the portable/USB version of Opera 9.64 here (decided yesterday to plonk it onto my flash stick after getting fucked off to near death with this building's comps having bloated, piss-poor IE installations) and I can't seem to find an option going by that name. Was you using an older version with different menu layouts, or something?

Actually, I've just checked and I was mistaken. Sorry. What Opera actually has is it own proxy settings and doesn't use Windows locally set proxy settings like IE or Chrome. They can be found in Tools -> Preferences -> Advance -> Network ->Proxy Servers. Think I got confused with the Tools -> Quick Preferences -> Enable Proxy Servers option.

And like Doctor Glyndwr said, crappy IT must of messed up the firewall for it to work as the web filtering worked by going though the locally set proxy which Opera can ignore.
