I want to know if YOU can eat a whole, standard sized can, of soup. Any flavour, any make, though just the kind that you bung in a saucepan/microwave and heat (no adding water).

Something like this:

Me. I've never been able to finish a whole can of soup in my life. I don't know why. I could eat comparable quantities of other foods or drinks, like a big milkshake, but never a whole tin of soup, or beans, or spaghetti hoops. I usually have about a third of a can of soup and mix it with some water to thin it down a bit.

Since I came out of hospital my surgery gave me a poorly tummy where the area was inflamed, and I wasn't able to eat properly, so they gave me these meal substitute milkshakes, which were horrible, but I was also able to have some soups. They were only powders, liek a cup-a-soup steady, Dimrill...), but I can't finish one. They make me feel so full :S I like soup (though I really only like fresh soup to the point I'd choose it over something else on offer), but only little amounts, and I wondered why it was so much more filling that any other food or if it wasn't and was 'just me'.

I have just had about half a mug of soup and now feel bleurgh.

It's easy.

I'd eat that with about 6 slices of toats

I cheerfully have one of those 600g fresh soups you get in the chilled section all to myself.

I eat it out of the pan too, for extra Waynetta points.

I wonder if it is my imagination, then.

I was always given soup if I was off school, ill, so perhaps I equate it with feeling unwell. But it's not an unwell feeling that I get, it is like being absolutely full, like you have just had Christmas dinner and someone is STILL trying to make you eat more pudding.

I struggle to eat a whole can of soup, but that's more to do with the fact I don't really like the stuff. I'll happily eat several platefuls of homemade soup though, especially "mentil soup".

I like soup. Soup is good. Soup keeps you full for longer than it would if it were exactly the same stuff solid but with a drink of water instead. Soup is good for weight loss, therefore. Yum.

I could probably have a full can, but I would never want to.

Yup, I can eat one of those chubby family tins of big soup or whatever, let alone merely a normal sized one! That's just a mere starter (greedy bastard, eh).

Baxters soups rule though I reckon - love the Cock-a-leekie and whatever the smoked haddock one is called. Fresh soups straight out of the chilled placcy bag are generally nicer than tinned as well. :)

Lentils, whatever veg is lying around, a big lump of ham or stock cubes if it's being shared with vegetarians. Lovely.
Plus you've got ham for sandwiches dip in it :)

@Cavey, is Cullen Skink your fishy soup?

Thats the soup me mam makes, usually without ham now since I turned veggie. Lentils, Leek, Potato, Carrot and sometimes turnip in geet big chunks. Also a dumpling if we've been good.

:this:

I love soup, me, and have it several times a week, mostly for lunch at work. I've been having it this week, even with the horrible heatwave, and have suffered some sniggering from colleagues ("Soup in this weather?!?!", etc).

But I love it - big bowl of soup, several slices of chunky crusty bread (white bread of course, not silly wholemeal or bread with bits in)...

Oh, and Mimi, not to poke fun at your inability to manage a full tin, but I remember at work once, a woman saying she didn't like to buy a can of Coke (or whatever), as she could never manage a whole one and it was a waste of money. I remember thinking, how odd, that an adult could not manage a full can of fizzy pop.

I usually put a coaster over mine so that bees don't get in, because I don't like a whole can of drink at once, either. (Though I could drink a whole can of drink if I wanted to).

I didn't eat tomato soup for about ten years.

I went camping with some friends and had two tins with me (same size pictured). I woke up one morning hungry and was being lazy, so I simply stabbed a hole in each side of the top and drank two straight cans, cold. It filled me up nice.

About an hour later I felt seriously nauseous and started throwing up pure tomato soup. It put me off for years. Infact, I only started eating it again (full of ripped up bits of bread) last year.

Same thing happened with Mango. I had food poisoning once and I ate a mango and threw it up and I can't eat them any more.

I'd have been so much more gutted if I couldn't eat the soup though, my Aunt does an incredible stew with brazing steak, potatoes, leeks, carrots, parsnips and peas in tomato soup and I would have cried if I couldn't eat it any more :D

On the subject of soups. I love butternut squash fresh soup with chili and cinnamon.

Utterly incredible.

As a kid I had a nasty sickness and diarrhea bug for about a week. The last thing I ate beforehand was my mum's cheese and potato pie. To this day, that sort of semi-burnt, almost crispy cheese topping makes me feel ill.

I find that cans that you have to add water to absolutely disgusting.

Also - my Nan once made soup by putting a cup'o'soup into a pan, adding water and boiling it, producing liquid with a 3 inch skin. It was horrific and she got really angry that I didn't eat it. I suspect this is because it was clearly inedible. :)

Oh, in regard to the tin of soup question I find it more of a struggle the older I get.

Yup. That's it exactly. If I even smell mango now my mouth begins to water in readiness for throwing up. I even have to be careful with those tropical fruit drinks because if I taste mango in any shape or form I nearly chunder. Shit, even the smell makes me feel ill to the point I have to get some fresh air.

I think it's strong flavoured things like Mango, tomato soup and cheese that are hard to overcome if you've thrown them up. Because they take ages to break down and digest and taste the same coming up only with essence of parmesan cheese.

Eurgh. :)

You have to heat those very gently and stir them pretty much the whole time they're on the heat.

Campbells IIRC, condensed. I only use them in cooking for Stews and things. I think that's what theyre intended for in honesty, because after adding the water they cost pretty much the same.

We live in a nation of soups.

One of those Heinz cans goes down easily. I can gobble up a pea and ham pot from Tesco too, which must be a half litre of soup. Delicious, espesh with lots of salty buttered granary bread. Hmm-mmm. Your tum tum can easily accommodate a tin of soup. Having the appetite to do so is another thing.

Switch soup for custard. Could you eat a tin?

I could eat a whole tin, but the Heinz tomato soup is hard going, very acidic or something and I haven't bought any for years. I can eat a whole pan of my spicy tomato and lentil soup though.

I like thinner soups. I much prefer fresh soups and add a bit of water to them. I think m favourite must be roasted red pepper soup with a fresh brown granary roll.

I can't stand 'cream of ________' soups :spew:

I could manage a tin of soup, a tin of custard with a tinned Heinz pudding and still have room for the can of kick ass. :metul:

Campbell's used to be the daddy.

But it went condensed, which meant a huge block of soup falls out of the can, and you're meant to then fill the can with water and mix that to make it 'right'.

But no, it never was. So I had to switch to Heinz (that and Campbells is now carrying the 'Baxters' banner, which means they can extra fuck off) for my soupage.

Why does homemade soup get progressively tastier as the week goes on?
