I have a somewhat posh Morphy Richards kettle that boils pretty fast and is nice and good. Here is a picture (except mine is green):

Except... by virtue of the shape of the spout, whenever I pour water out of it the Coandă effect almost always results in a significant-enough-to-be-annoying amount running down the front and onto the floor, instead of into my mug/pot/whatever.

Any suggestions how to stop this happening?

You just wanted to use the term 'Coandă effect', you smug bastard. ;)

Hold your cup under the kettle.

Boil it in a saucepan?

Yes, but unless the cup was actually touching the underside of the kettle as I pour it, some of the water will still just run down the front of the kettle and onto my feet.

Mrs Metal was convinced the kettle was 'leaking' until I showed her there's no holes or damage in the spout.

I nearly said that, but just about managed to refrain. :DD

It's inherent in the geometry of the spout. Buy a less shit kettle.

I agree but just before you do that you might try taking a dremel or similar to the spout and see if you can rectify it yourself.

Where should I carve away at it exactly?

It's caused by the angle of the spout in relation to the flow, no?

Looking at the kettle, you'd need to add, not take away

Craig suffers the same problem with our coffee jug, but I do not. We worked out it is because he often pours the coffee with his left hand which somehow results in the water travelling down the body of the jug and off the bottom. If he pours it with his right hand, it doesn't happen.

Fill the kettle with cold water and try pouring it slower. Then remove the lid and try pouring it and see if that changes it. Then swap hands, just in case.

Fluid dynamics is very difficult to model without obscure computer software. You couldn't guess at the effect of any changes without trying them first.

Our work kettle does the same - the solution is to be patient and pour more slowly. That extra second only marginally damages the brew.

If that doesn't try faster (and faster).

I do have a working copy of FLUENT on this computer... all I'd need would be someone to make a geometry in gambit.

Hah! Here you are, Meaty. Go measure your kettle's spout geometry. Minutely.

Have you tried counteracting the koala effect by going to Australia where the water swirls the other way round?

Much of what causes the water to run down the spout is surface tension, isn't it? What about using something known to break surface tension, like rubbing washing up liquid around the neck of the spout. Gonna make you a shitty cup of tea, mind.

Just suck the water out of the kettle using a straw and then spit it into the cups.
