I know it's old now. What never fails to amaze me though is it's beauty. It also seems that the longer you play the more beautiful it becomes too.

I particularly love all the shades of brown. ;)

I don't know, something's gone hideously wrong with Codemasters and their driving games this generation. I used to be the first one in line to buy the ToCA and Colin McRae games, but this and GRID are just utter tosh.

It's almost criminal that this is a success when Baja: Edge of Control is far superior.

Never heard of it. Google time !..... Ah, no PC version that's why I've not heard of it :(

That actually suprises me greatly because Juiced 2 was THQ and that came out on P.C.

Harumph.

I was hardly going to do a search for a thread on a game I hadn't heard of so that I knew it existed and didn't have to say I didn't know, was I?

I can't imagine there's a door big enough that needs that size of a wedge.

If you hated PGR4 for being neither an arcade game nor a sim, you'd do well not to.

Dirt is great, at least most of it is. Once you get to the quicker cars the sensation of speed is brilliant and getting near the end of Pikes Peak after a flawless run is one of the most arse-clenchingly tense bits of any racer I've played.

Yeah that too. Mark, I totally agree. I've grown out of arcade racers and I don't have the patience for sims. So DiRT and GrId (lol, sorry !) are right up my alley.

The only minor gripe I have with DiRT is that it doesn't look quite as good as Grid, yet takes a lot more grunt to get it moving.

It's not a problem of course with the 280GTX, but it seems to go from 100fps to 20fps and then back up. Very annoying when taking a really tight corner.

Apparently the issue is caused by the sound support in the game. Which would make sense because I just binned my Clabs X-FI (worst driver support I have ever known) for a Terratec. OpenAL wasn't working properly after the switch so I had to reinstall it..

Indeed it was. Sorry, I assumed that was one of your pointed "use the search function" link monkey efforts.

Apologieses!

If it was, I'd include the 'hilight' bit in the link :)

More wonderful scenery. I've completed it now. Can't say I'm in a rush to go back to it but then I've done it bit by bit over many weeks.

Time to reinstall Grid and complete that again :D

The thing with the Stratos was it was so revolutionary and so different that you either 'got it' or you didn't. There's never really been anything like it before or after.

And that's what's so beautiful about it, apart from it's pedigree of course.

Codebastards racing rot set in much further back. After the incredible original TOCA Touring Cars back in what, 1996?, they brought out the incredible original Colin and somehow managed to make TOCA 2 even better. But that was it.

Colin 2 looked amazing (as good as early PS2 stuff) but the handling was nowhere near as much fun as the original game and as a result the whole thing wasn't enjoyable. TOCA3 (World Touring Cars) likewise had greatly simplified handling so the knife edge that you rode at high speed was gone - only deliberately stupid driving would cause spins and crashes. Even the promising first appearance on the PS2, TOCA Race Driver, was cack - both due to the pointless story mode (which you had to endure as pretty much the entire game was 'locked' at the start)and dull racing.

Really disappointed that's how it went - in the end I had Gran Turismo for track racing and the official WRC game for rallying.
