I've just been for a particularly vicious poo, so I read the latest Retro Gamer interview with the Oliver twins. They say they've got a dream where they bring back Dizzy in some capacity. So with Team17 doing Worms Ad Infinitum and Alien Breed again it got me a thinkin'. I'd really like to play an XBLAH/PISSYNAN Dizzy remake. Anyone else?

I don't know. I can imagine myself getting really frustrated with the instant deathness of it, these days.

The Oliver Twins have constantly implied they aren't interested in doing a remake, only something new and "special". They had a 3D demo of Dizzy running a few years back and he's hardly a big seller compared to modern titles. So it would be a labour of love and if it was to be a labour of love then they've pretty much said they would only do it their own way.

Exactly. I want them to use what they know about games and those who play them, and create something that can stand alone in its own right as a good game.

The interview was good and I love the fact they still have everything to do with the old games, including having them on display in their offices. You get the feeling this is something they've always done and not just when retro became 'trendy'.

Where do you draw the line though? Alien Breed, for example, uses a new perspective (3d instead of top down), control mechanism (it's a twin stick shooter), gameplay elements (a lot more different types of enemies and weapons to choose from), and so on. It is a new thing.

How about "If Alien Breed had never existed, and no-one had ever heard of Team 17, would this game be successful?" as a determinant?

Could we change the name of this site to beeggcellenttoeachother.com?

Anyway, here's a good interview in Amstrad Action from back in the day. Be warned though it's attack of the JPEG artifacts!

Worms ruined Team 17, as soon as they did it they did nothing else ever. Even if you like Worms that's annoying.

Prince Of The Yolkfolk is the series pinnacle. Tightly designed and great fun.

Was Yolkfolk an Oliver Twins one though? I seem to recall the later 16 biters being farmed out to someone else.

Big Red Software did the 8 bit and 16 bit versions of the later games. The Oliver Twins still supervised it all though apparently.

To be honest I always thought Big Red did a better job. More polish.

Fantasy World, you mean? Yeah, that was my favourite. You got three lives as well, which made it infinitely more forgiving than Treasure Island.

I'll always have a fondness for Treasure Island, as it was the first one I played, but I don't think going back to it now would be a good idea.

Same engine. Seymour Goes To Hollywood (or whatever the first one was) was originally a Dizzy game until Codemasters/The Oliver Twins decreed that Dizzy should be kept in a fantasy setting. So Seymour was born.

no it just showed they were some demo programmers with skills rather than game designers, took an external game and remande it,

overdrive was the most horrid though, who could have made that

Hello, I'm Marcus (Hoover - Ed). I am appalled at your comments as all our games are wonderful. We had all our games playtested by a blind deaf and dumb kid called Tommy who said they were the best thing ever. So how dare you not award any of our games less than 99%. It is an appalling travesty of a travesty.

It's people like you that killed the Amiga. Amiga murderer!

Dizzy Kart Racing - where all the drivers look the same from the back
Dizzy Crickets - Smack Dizzy around a cricket field

I sunk hours into Dizzy back in the day. I don't think I'd give it more than ten minutes now though. Much as with Speedball 2 which I got on XBLA on easter monday and played it all the way up to... lunchtime.

Dizzy Rascal - Bully clone
Spin Dizzy - Roll our egg-shaped hero across an isometric landscape taking care to avoid falling to his doom. To add to the fun controls, only supports Live Vision camera and Dizzy has only one life.

As Chinny said, virtually all of them were, the Olivers only wrote Dizzy as well as Treasure and Fantasy Islands. All the rest were someone else.

Was Kwik Snax a Dizzy game? Or am I getting confused with some other popular Spectrum character?

It was. Remember we played it a few months ago as part of the 8 Bit Challenge?

Also Fast Food, Bubble Dizzy, Dizzy Panic and Dizzy Down The Rapids.

Kwik Snax is the only one worth bothering with although Bubble Dizzy on the Amiga was OK.
