I've got some good ideas of a new monitor I'd like to buy mid next month, PC Advisor is raving about these funsters:

Viewsonic VX2260WM 4.5/5

iiyama Prolite E2208HD

LG C11960 TR 4.5/5

LG Flatron L226WTQ

The trouble is finding them. PC World naturally is feck all use, only stocking model varients that I've never even heard of. I have a spend limit of £160, and will be mainly using the monitor for photoshop work and gaming, but colour fidelity is pretty important. A 22" would be nice. Can you think of some websites that do good service with fine prices, or offer any alternatives that might be worth a look by me? I need to buff up my aging computer a bit and replace the CRT with one of those, and get an external hard drive too. (Thinking one in Maplins, a Seagate 1TRB for £75!)

Any advice or naysaying welcome.

No HDMI on those either, if that's important Pete. You know, for when you buy a 360. ;)

My Dell would run a GX4000 if I still had one. Beats yer XBox 700's into the ground.

Also runs a C64, WHICH I HAVE PROVED!

You don't have a GX4000? :o Even I've got one. Er, somewhere. With a vast collection of games (Burnin Rubber).

I thought the Prolite was HDMI... hmmm. I wouldn't mind a HDMI one though, be handy if I want to do HDR photography in the distant photo. Plus... EGGSBOX!

My last one broke. After I donated all my games to be copied for emulation (yes any version of Navy Seals or Pang you play in an emulator was from my carts) I binned those as well.

I didn't even know there was a GX4000 emu.

Several of the Master System dumps on the web are from mine :)

Just a note: I use the DVI input of my TV for HDMI, due to it being an HDTV from before HDMI was at all common.

It generally works, but need a separate sound cable.

All the CPC emulators can emulate a CPC Plus, and therefore a GX4000. A GX4000 is just a 464+ with no keyboard or tape recorder. In fact the "pause" button actually maps to the "P" key.

You could always get a VGA cable, when you get your 360.

Uhh, what do those things have to do with each other?

That'll only work if the DVI port supports HDCP though, which isn't all that common on monitors.

Heh. VGA is fine, and I've had no problems with it except for Capcom games (which are usually shit anyway) and their screen-tearing.

It's a shame you missed the deal in the Bargains thread for a Dell 24" monitor for £179.99* a while back, Pete. I got one, and I'm incredibly happy with it — VGA, DVI and HDMI inputs

*I know that's slightly above your budget anyway, but it was an excellent deal.

Tcho, shame I missed that. Wouldn't have been able to afford it anyway - and I won't be able to afford this monitor until mid next month. I'm being assailed by so many unexpected bills taking bites out of me at the moment that I keep thinking I'm Rod Taylor in The Birds.

You're right Doctor Glyndwr, I have no idea what I'm actually talking about. Will all these lovely monitors be compatible with a 7600GS card? Being a luddite and never having had bought a monitor before (my current is an ancient CRT) I don't really know how they work.

Every place I've studied uses Dell monitors and they've always been rather good, so I got one.

I'd be astonished if they weren't.
