A batch of twenty pence pieces -- between 50,000 and 200,000 of them -- were incorrectly stamped out by the Royal Mint and have no stamping date on them. Apparently these are worth "up to £50" to coin collectors!

The London Mint will give you £50 for handing one in. They'll probably be worth more than that.

[edit]Fixed for accuracy

Heard about this earlier today. It gave me a good excuse to count my spare-change jar, and while I don't have any of said 20p pieces, I have £76 in <20p coins. Trip to the bank at the weekend, I reckon.

Presumably they'll be worth less the more that this news spreads.

Careful, the "London Mint" doesn't appear to be "The mint" but a very cleverly named commercial organisation.

EDIT :
"The London Mint Office offers quality and choice in collectors’ coins and is one of the leading distributors of collector coins in the UK."

"Founded in 2006 and based in London, we are part of the international Samlerhuset Group, which operates in ten European markets and has a turnover of approximately €200 million."

Cunts.

I made this mistake too. Mind you, they are still giving you £50. From the limited reading I've done, general consensus seems to be that you'll have to wait quite a long time for the value of the coin to exceed that -- the London Mint are taking a long term view of this. So for an ordinary member of the public it's probably a good idea to take the fast, easy cash.

I have 10 20s in my pocket right now, so I just checked them, Not only do I not have any that are new enough to have the new design, 3 of them are 1982. Blimey.

I had £60 in 20p coins in my spare-change jar. There were only about a dozen at most with the new design on. They all had dates, unfortunately.

I have 1 but it's a new design 2008 marked.

I have about £50 in them at home but they're mostly ancient.

Edit : Also why is this news NOW? It was discovered and posted about - but maybe not here - in January.

Yeah it was on BBC News yesterday morning.

I checked elsewhere, the thread on it was started on the 29th January.

Weird, must have run out of news.

I got excited when I checked a few coins and saw no date on them, but that was just the 'tails' side. The year is on the 'head' side. Drag.

My mate found one today, and sold it for 150 quid on ebay in a matter of minutes.

A friend reckons a friend of his sold one for £4000.. I think he's stretching the truth a bit!

Also... if you've got one, would it be worth keeping hold of it for a few years? Surely the value can only go up?

Money won't be worth anything in a few years. In less than six months, Britain will look like this...

Image

...with swine flu mutants scrabbling over the rubble, fighting against the 'norms' who were the 2% of the populatuion with a natural immunity.* (source: alarmist British media)

Better sell now, use the proceeds to build a bunker, buy some guns, canned goods (don't forget a can opener) and one of these...

...for when you go 'scavving' in the 'wastes'.
