Does anyone know how to get the keyboards off these blasted things? I'm trying to get to the fan as it's not moving. Google has told me to take the keyboard off to get to it, but it won't budge. Is there a secret password or something?

Any sensible suggestions would be most appreciated.

Is this flush above the keys or the recess above that? One website said something about removing the speaker cover first.

oh and make sure you've removed the screw holding it in from the bottom. They keys fly all over the shop when the base bends beyond about 15 degrees.

No support on the Toshiba site Myps? I'd make damn sure of what I was doing before frustration turns to further wreckage.

Most laptops I've worked on, you remove a few retaining screws from underneath, slide the keyboard to one side to free up some tabs, then lever it upwards to remove, then disconnect the little ribbon cable. The screws to remove are usually marked with a keyboard icon embossed in the plastic.

I used to be an approved Toshiba Laptop repairer back in 1997.

But it will either be tabs top or bottom, a removable bezal. Or screws underneath with a K in a box next to it.

edit: or a combination of all of them

Are you sure you need to take the keyboard off myp? I had a tosh P100 (which I think is fairly similar) and to cure the overheating I just took the grille off the fan intake, on the underside, and cleaned that out.

There's nothing I can take off on the underside except the HDD, RAM and wireless card covers.

Success! Sort of.

I've got the keyboard off and detached it. Now I've got a thin layer of plastic/metal which sits above the HDD and fan etc. How do I get this off? The guide that DP linked to says to remove some more screws, but I can't find any. :(

That's what I'm thinking, but can I just jimmy it off, or will I break it? This is the first ever time I've taken a laptop apart (I've only done desktop and tablet computers before).

From memory... 12 years ago mind you

you take the screws out but the case is still clipped together. Tosh supplied us with wide plastic chisels type things to prise the laptop apart.

If you need a chisel-type thing, your local DIY store will sell you a putty knife.

A chisel?

I've opened stuff that I didn't want destroying by using the edge of a bank card as leverage.

Correct. Or in extreme cases, a table knife from the cutlery drawer.
Remember the object is to locate the little latches which hold the seam together and distort the plastic near them so they pop open - if you just prise the whole edge apart, you'll exert enough force to break the clip, and then it won't go back together properly.

Do you have a canteen at work?

Try a butter knife perhaps?

Thats waht Tosh called them.. they were about 2 inch wide and bevelled/shamfered so you could pop catches and made of plastic so not to damage the case.

I've pretty much dismantled the whole thing now, including taking out the DVD drive, but I still can't get the case to pop open.

It's going to be really funny* when I take the whole thing home in bits tonight on my bike.

* Not funny

Right, I couldn't get the casing off because I'm a spaz, but I managed to get hold of some canned air and fucked that shit up.

I've put it all back together and it seems to work, but the power light now longer glows blue - whoops!

It doesn't glow at all now, so I think I've dislodged the LED cable for it somewhere (or taken it out and forgotten to put it back).

So I've gone for a Dell Inspiron 15 for £399 with a free upgrade of an extra gig of RAM. It seems like a fairly decent deal to me.
