Moderate surprise of the week #127

Sitting around the pool, it appears that well over 50% of people have tattoos. I was very surprised it was that many. Was my sample representative, or an anomaly? Do you have any tattoos? If so, what of and where?

Nope, and the older I get the less likely I am to get one. I wouldn't want to be stuck with the type of tattoo I'd have picked at 20 or 30.

I don't dislike the right ones on other people though.

I have two. One on my back and one on the top of my thigh.

I would like more and I'm considering having the one on my back changed to the Bat Symbol.

Always wanted one but never got round to it/had the bottle or whatever. Probably getting too long in the tooth to start now!

I have a Phoenix at the top of my spine but below my collar. I love it. When I get married, I'm planning a Vegas themed tattoo, of the four suits of card in a line done in outline only except the heart which will be filled in.

I have one on my shoulder its celtic art \symbol

I just liked it when I had it done 15 years ago, keep meaning to have it done again as its faded a bit now.

Never get around it though as I always see the tattoo shops when we are out doing something else.

Yes, it's almost like everyone has them nowadays. I see kids in the subway, looking under 20, covered in tattoos, including their necks. Besides, this whole trend is ruining porn for me.

I've asked for the question to be inserted into one of our natrep surveys, so I'll let you know what percentage of people have them.

I have a tribal tramp stamp at the bottom of my back. I take the piss out of it but I was looking at it the other day and thinking how much I still liked it. And I paid for it with my first months pay packet when I started working so it has nice meaning to me.

I would like more. There are some awesome tattooists around Nottingham and I follow a few on Instagram. Just trying to decide what and where...

It seems like about 75% of people up here have at least one.

I don't have any or plan on getting any, don't really want to be stuck with something that could look shit and would harm prospects of getting a respectable job in the future.

Or if you go with the poll at the top of the page that says 78% dont have one and dont intend to get one ?

I think Nick meant 'up here' where he was living/staying, which is perhaps a different section of society/the world than the select few that make up BEEX.

I have no issue with them. Like anything they can be fine on some people and shit on others. I kind of wanted one when I was younger, but never had the confidence to get one. Not overly upset I didn't get one, and I wouldn't get one now, but I have no problem with tattoos per se.

I wanted a particular tattoo when I was 17. Had I got it then (or the following few years), I'd still love it now. It's a great design, and means a lot to me.

However, the longer I dithered, the more I saw they became normal. People now seem to get them to fit in, and that's sad. As an expression of you, they can be beautiful and amazing (pupil is a boss, for example). But 99% of them are shit, and on shitheads, so for that reason I'm glad I never did.

What once was a symbol of being into something different has become this decade's mullet. Except you can't just cut it off when the 90s come.

I also don't mind them, it's just that most people have shitty tastes.

I don't understand how people can choose the same tattoo design and styles as everyone else when it's something they'll have for the rest of their lives. I do remember the barbed wire tattoos from the mid nineties and the tribal designs that were so hip in the late 90's and early 00's. Now most of them look crap and dumb. I just wonder what all of these kids with colourful neck tattoos want to do with their lives when they grow up.

I got a lizard to the right of my belly when I was 17, I drew the design myself and took months to get it right the way I wanted it. I still really like it 10 years later and I'm glad i got it. I got a lizard because I like lizards, its not particularly symbolic or anything. I do want another one but I cant think what to get, don't really want a "trend" thing like a tearaway which seems to be the current in thing, kind of like the barbed wire thing that ruysan was saying. I suppose I will eventually think of something to get but it will be my own design, again i agree with ruysan, i couldn't bear the thought of someone somewhere having the same tattoo as me. The other problem is where to put it, i really like where my current one is but im not sure where I'd put another, would have to be out of sight normally and it would have to look right, to really fit in.

*ramble ends*

Most of them!.

I have a particular design for a tattoo in my mind for more than 15 years. My upper arm covered in intertwined dragons and serpents done with an old norse aesthetic. It would be the coolest looking tatoo ever. I would probably be mistaken for a neo nazi though

I don't think I could get a tattoo, nor do I think it would suit me, but if I did it would probably be something like this. In fact, this is the first picture of a tattoo I have ever seen that's made me think 'that's pretty'.

30%! Slightly higher for men than women, and age is quite evenly spread.
