I can't wait for this! It's scheduled for a "summer release" on PSN and Xbox Live, with a PC version coming in September. It'll cost 1200 MS points or a tenner on PSN (probably).

It features three maps from the original Battlefield 1942, re-done and looking swanky using the Bad Company engine, with a fourth map unlocked after the entire community kills millions of people, which should take a week or two after release, weather permitting.

It looks awesome. Everyone has to buy it for bezzie squad-based action.

Various media and info below:

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/battl ... 3-hands-on

Quote:
Battlefield 1943 will have players playing as either the United States Marine Corps or the Imperial Japanese Navy with up to 24 players on mainly three classic Battlefield maps: Wake Island, Guadalcanal, and Iwo Jima; but after 43 million kills upon both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3's release, an additional air combat only map called Coral Sea will be unlocked while the PC version will be accessible during its release.

Like Battlefield: Bad Company, 1943 will feature the Frostbite Engine for its environmental damage. The game will only feature the series' signature Conquest mode when released. Similar to Battlefield Heroes, 1943 will only feature three clases - infantryman, rifleman, and scout. The game also features a regenerating health system similar to the Call of Duty or Halo series.

High quality version of the gameplay video:

http://www.gametrailers.com/video/nyc-c ... 1943/45234

:metul:

Oh, and for the interested, it runs on dedicated EA servers, so no laggy self hosting, and supports 24 players (12 on each team). You can also create your own game with just your chums, and it'll plonk you on the nearest empty dedicated server.

Are those three/four 'classic' maps the only maps in the game, and not even new? That's a bit shit, if so.

:(

Yes, there are only four maps. Have you ever played a Battlefield game? One map is enough!

1942 had about a dozen, didn't it?

And oh god, Coral Sea is the one with a massive stretch of water between you and the opposition. That's not one to play with randoms.

Still love the series, mind.

It's a fascinating concept, this. The polish of a retail release -- dedicated servers are a very nice touch, a fraction of the content, but punted out over XBLAH etc for pretty cheap money. Be interesting to see how it plays out. I'm sure they're considering more maps etc as DLC down the road if it does well.

I've never actually played a Battlefield game. I take it it's a class-based FPS with vehicles?

Yeah, but this is a Live Arcade game! 1200 points and download only, hence the awesome!

That's an awful lot of graphical fidelity for an Arcade game. Have Microsoft let them off the maximum file size?

It's THE class based FPS with vehicles! I absolutely love the series thanks to the many crazy things you can do with its sandbox-ish set up. Attaching satchel charges to a jeep and driving it into the enemy base on a suicide mission is awesome, as is crashing your plane into a jeep, etc.

Everyone should be getting this!

Mr Meaty Angel and I were discussing this over lunch a few months back. We wondered why no-one has shipped Tribes for XBLAH yet.

I'll be up for this if the hivemind says so. Never played a BF game before.

Hivemind says... YES!

I'm really surprised so many people haven't played a Battlefield game before. You'd all do well to buy Battlefield 2 and give it a go, it's probably less than a fiver now. Or, just, y'know, wait 'til this one comes out very soon indeed.

They've all been good, to be honest. BF1942, BF2, BF2142.

I didn't play/fancy 2142, but by the time it came out I was into Xbox 360 and had more or less given up on my PC as a gaming machine.

I love Modern Combat to bits, but...
Despite still selling the game in the shops (around 12 quid last I looked) they've pretty much stopped supporting it. Last I played there was one server that kept crashing & they'd took away the ability to request/start a new game. Cunts.

Also, the campaign was kind of interesting but ultimately just a tutorial for the multiplayer. Bad Company is cheap as chips now & has a campaign that stands on it's own. Unfortunately the multiplayer is a bit wank.

Despite all this I'm fairly optimistic about 1943, although it would be nice if they managed to squeeze more peeps in because the maps are fucking huge.

I know that, but it was worth mentioning since it's the only bit of BF2 you're still able to play :'(

EDIT: On eggbox at least.

You somehow seem to have mistyped "getting your team to jump into the back of the lorry you are driving, and then drive it off the cliff".

BF1942 was seriously awesome good fun, even when playing it properly, even if I was shit at flying. Although setting yourself up with a chum and operating as a 2 man bazooka sniper team was fun, IIRC.

:D

There was something amusing about people silently being really pissed off with you for driving them into a ravine as well. Nobody used voice chat then, just the keyboard, and it was almost more fun to imagine them shouting at you than actually being able to hear them.

I'd be interested in this, seeing as BF1942/2/2142 passed me by. I justified buying Sam and Max (which is brilliant, btw) for 1,600 points because of all the points I'd saved from not buying 'ok' games for 1,200 points when I'd have impulse bought them for 800.

It's like MS are filtering out the mediocre. I've got about 40-odd XBLA games and half of them I probably only bought because they were 400 points.

I tried the Sam & Max game having never played them in the old days but having to actually sit through every bit of dialogue rather than just reading and skipping to the next bit was a complete deal breaker.

Well, the dialogue is kind of the point. If you took out the humour and story, you'd just have a very basic puzzle game.

I don't like having to wait for the voice acting to finish before you can go on, but I think I read quite quickly.

Put subtitles on, turn voice off and press B to skip through, then. Easy. It's all in the options.

Coral sea is the mass-TK level, too - because it's the one with two small bits of land with planes on, and a big stretch of ocean in between.

How do I get XBox points if I don't pay for my Live with credit card?

Also - have they switched Live back on yet? I couldn't connect all weekend.

It's been back on since Wednesday, chap.

You can buy a points card from anywhere that sells games, pretty much. HMV are doing 2,100 for £16.99 at the moment, I think.

You can also register your credit card and use it to buy points without it being used to renew Live -- I do. It's the most expensive way to buy points though.

As for not being able to reconnect to Live, try rebooting your router in the first instance.
