So my Granddad is probably going to die in the next 24 hours. It's been a long long time coming, he's surrounded by people who love him, and he is in relatively little pain (because of all the morphine), but his organs are failing, and he is no longer able to drink.

He has cancer of the pretty much everywhere, and it's amazing he stayed alive so long (ten years ago he was told he might not have more than a couple of years). He got to have his 70th birthday (2 weeks ago) and his 25th wedding anniversary.

This is my first experience of death, not sure how it will actually hit me when he does die, but I am glad to have had the opportunity to have said everything we needed to to each other.

Deepest consolations. I had pretty much the same experience with my grandfather who died of cancer pretty much everywhere :(

Its tough but like you said at least you had time to talk beforehand.
I'm expecting my surviving grandmas to not be around a vast while longer and my great uncle surely one of the coolest guys I ever met died a couple of years back after surviving years on about w one third of a liver, smoking players navy cut til the bitter end.
Just remembering, among his vast knowledge and experiences, the thing ill always think was amazing was his ability to know where someone was born/raised by their accent. He did it on a couple of friends of mine :) who were amused by it too.

Sorry to meander, but maybe it'll help you and there are surely similar memories of your grandfather you can hold close in harder times ahead.

My Nana is actually in incredible health. She is a bit older than him, but she is incredibly physically and mentally active for her age. She's got a good few years left in her.

My grandpa died last year. It's not easy, but now I find that more and more when I think of him I just think of the good times, not the end. It's something.

Sorry to hear this Lewie - death of relatives is something you get increasingly used to as you get older - it's still upsetting, but not quite as traumatic as you get used to the feelings you're likely to go through. I know it will be hard, probably on the actual day of the funeral, but hopefully it should be a cathartic experience. Give the guy a good send off and remember him well. Best

Sorry to hear your bad news. The sad fact is that you and your family have already started grieving, so it should be easier to deal with. The loss of a loved one and family member is always tough and our thoughts are with you.

Condolences bro.

Be glad you had him until the end. Say what you need to say to him, whatever's in your heart. Trust me, there's nothing worse than losing someone so quickly that thoughts go unsaid and love stays inside.

Spend as much time with him as you can bear and let him know he's loved and you'll be ok.

I've done all that, I think that's why I am so relaxed about it.

Sorry to hear what you and your family are going through Lewie.

Don't be worried about how you'll handle everything, just don't bottle it up mate.

Sorry to hear about your grandad, Lewie. I lost my first grandparent a couple of years back. I was relieved to be able to give my goodbyes, but it still hurts when it happens. Don't worry if you start wondering why you aren't 'feeling' more grief, often it just comes out all of a sudden, unexpectedly. Take care mate. *Hugs*

Off for a pint. I'll toast to you and your lot mate.

(But not out loud, that would be awkward to explain)

I must say I have avoided reading this thread. But from what I have seen the love you feel has been perfectly expressed.

It reminds me of my grandad. He had a lovely time with his whole family. I planted seeds with him in the garden while he was with me. 12 hours after he went back to Durham he was dead. My last memory was of him laughing in my parents garage.

My thoughts go out to you at this time.

Really sorry to hear it. I think the fact you had the chance to say what you needed to each other will be of great comfort to you in both the short and long term.

I got to sort of say goodbye to nan when she died. What cuts me up is that she had a stroke and couldn't remember who I was :(

She was kind of lost without grandad.
