Fuck. Me.

Quote:

The oil giant acknowledged no wrongdoing in the hangings of six people opposed to oil exploration in the west African country, including playwright and activist Ken Saro-Wiwa.

But it said it agreed to settle the action in the hope of aiding the "process of reconciliation" and also recognised that the victims' families had suffered.

Mr Saro-Wiwa's son, Ken Jr, who helped bring the lawsuit in the US District Court in New York, hailed the pay-out as "a victory".

BitterWallet has this to say.

Quote:
Time for an ethical question. If a company with a UK presence had been involved in the execution of environmental activists, would it make you think twice about using their products?

Personally, this writer would say hell yes, but at the end of the day it’s down to yourself and your conscience. Of course it’s a hypothetical question and nothing to do with the fact that Royal Dutch Shell have agreed to pay out almost £10 million dollars following a lawsuit over the 1995 hangings of six oil exploration protestors in Nigeria. Crucially, Shell acknowledged no wrongdoing. AND NO ONE IS SAYING THEY WERE INVOLVED. RIGHT?

In the lawsuit, heard in New York, Shell were accused of colluding with the country’s former military government to silence activists in the country and helped furnish Nigerian police with weapons, participated in security sweeps of the area, and hired troops that shot at villagers protesting over the construction of a pipeline. THEY DENIED BEING INVOLVED IN ALL OF THIS. RIGHT?

Shell hope that the pay-out will help the “process of reconciliation” and their executive director of exploration and production, Malcolm Brinded, said: “This gesture also acknowledges that even though Shell had no part in the violence that took place, the plaintiffs and others have suffered.” SHELL HAD NO INVOLVEMENT IN THE VIOLENCE. OKAY?

Bloody hell.

Do Shell only sell fuels through their own stations or do they sell to other companies? I say this as I only ever refuel at Morrissons, but I don't think they go out themselves to source the oil and refine it.

I see what you're getting at, but I do feel that boycotting one particular petrol station brand is missing the point a bit.

Random example:
Quote:
One of BP's largest refineries in the USA exploded in 2005 causing 15 deaths. The fall-out from the accident continues to cloud BP's corporate image because of the mismanagement at the plant. [..] Maintenance and safety at the plant had been cut as a cost-saving measure, the responsibility ultimately resting with executives in London.

BP's image has been tarnished somewhat by its involvement with the controversial Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline, criticized for human rights abuses, environmental and safety concerns.

In July 2006, a group of Colombian farmers won a multi million pound settlement from BP after the British oil and gas company was accused of benefiting from a regime of terror carried out by Colombian government paramilitaries to protect a 450-mile (720 km) pipeline.

Fuck me.

At least we can rely on the UK government to help protest this sort of thing, right kids? I'm sure the outraged British public will take it to the streets, just as soon as they've finished protesting about expenses/paedos/Europe/foreigners/oil prices/pylons/Susan Boyle...

Oops, just read your post. And I recall now that other petrol companies have shit records as well. And for those hopefuls, don't forget Bhopal and the agonising struggle to get anything out of Union Carbide.

Me, I don't have a car so I get to be smug on this issue. ("Pete! Still want a lift to Indietracks?" - Sue) Errr, ummm.

Morrisons fuel comes from Texaco, but whether they're related to Shell or not I couldn't tell you.

No, death-machine Pylons abduct and brainwash or hunt and kill many people every year. Unfortunately they've got a strong pro-hunting lobby, so the Tories protect them.

Yes you may.

No, he can't, because he has all the electric cars, stopping everyone else from using them.

I'm only allowed to put super unleaded from Tesco or Shell in my car, and it's not happy on Tesco's one.

I suppose this is going to mean in some peoples' eyes that I am personally responsible for hanging those guys 5 years before I owned a car. Then again, as it's one of those nasty tree-hating cars I've presumably already condemned all the children and budgies.

Interesting, I can only use super unleaded in mine but the difference between V-Power and Tesco's own-brand is virtually unnoticeable.

(Spoilered for tangential gas guzzlering)
ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
It seems to vary car by car as well - on briskoda it's (anecdotally) about 50-50 for Octy RSes. We can't tell a difference between either or even 95 RON (it has a 98 RON map and 95 fallback). It was pretty obvious on the BMW (lower performance and higher consumption on Tesco). It only runs on 98 and higher, which is why I can't use any other super. Now it tends to run like shit on a whim. Hooray!

Esso!! They kill tigers! Or something. This is bad and all, but it happens all the time so it is all okay. Right? Seriously, £10 million for killing 5 people from a company who reported £13.9billion profit last year.

The freaks' garage round the corner turned into a Texaco franchise the other week, and has been charging 104.9 for both unleaded and diesel for a week. It's always been a significant ripoff, but that's a new low. And yet people still put fuel in there despite there being an, um, Shell just round the corner, which rose to 99.9 today (2p this week!). Freaks' garage, see (the most consistent theory is that it's a front for drug dealing).

The important part is legally they did nothing. It wouldn't have been if they'd been convicted of anything.

Is there nothing about admission of culpability, if they've paid people off for directly the thing they're accused of? In the law rules book I mean?

That's why they deliberately said "Even though we had nothing to do with it, these people have suffered so we're giving them some money".

Total, Fina and Elf are the same company

Q8 is Sure is Pace

Tesco are Esso

Also petrol stations are Company owned (ie owned by Shell, BP, Texaco etc) others are Dealer owned (ie owned by a person who has chosen to use a certain fuel company for their fuel) There is no real way of telling which is which from a customer point of view.

Tesco don't share ownership with Esso though. I'm not even sure they even use Esso petrol except in some Esso owned garages that happen to have a Tesco Express.

Some Tesco garages use Esso (where you can't use your vouchers or claim Clubcard points) and some have "Tesco" petrol (where you can use your vouchers and claim Clubcard points).

I have no idea where they get the "Tesco" petrol from.

Millions of years ago, some things that were alive, ceased to be. Over time, the immense pressure on the remains turned them into oil. This is pumped up to the surface, and refined into the various grades of hydrocarbons. These are then loaded onto ships and taken around the world to depots. Then loaded onto tankers and taken to petrol stations.

I have no idea where they get the "Tesco" petrol from.
They get it from the company that wants the least money.
