So, I took my 360 to Bedfordshire to play on while building my Tomcat and plugged it into a telly up there. Didn't change any output resolutions or anything.
Anyway, now I'm back home, and when I try and watch a DVD all I get is the audio, and a big XBOX logo on a white background. WTF?

For some reason my 360 won't play the audio on most dvds. I usually have to switch the HDMI cable to the PS3 and play it on that. I dont know why Ive never wondered whats causing it. I'm daft I suppose.

How do you get your audio, through the telly? The Xbox could be sending a DTS bitstream down the HDMI, a lot of tellies can't decode that. Go see if you can set it to only do PCM instead. Although I don't think the 360 dash has the same range of settings the PS3 does (something they appear to be fixing in the new update).

You'll probably need to speak in English for Gill.

Predictable, but still funny. Just about.

:this: Your TV has no twangdoodler, Gill.

There's 3 settings in the audio options; Stereo, Pro Logic & 5.1. AFAIK they only affect the optical out, but I could be wrong.

So how does it work through the ps3 if it's the tellys fault?

PS3 will be putting different audio data down the HDMI. Maybe.

Xbox logo on a white background? Is that the 360 logo or the original Xbox logo?

360, yo. Like I said, the audio from the DVD is playing. I tried it in the HD-DVD drive too, so I'm sure it's some weird output problem. There was an error message that flicked up on the screen for like .01 seconds, but I've forgotten it. Something to do with permissions, I think.
I thought it'd be a common problem, but it appears not.

Have you done all the idiot checks like power cycling, removing and reseating cables and trying a different disc?

I haven't actually tried a different DVD, I was thinking about that earlier. I shall do so tonight.

Aha - the error is "secure hdcp link not found".
Searching now.

Tried all resolutions and all reference levels live MS suggest. Still no joy.

Oh dear. Were they both HDMI tellies? Have you tried power-cycling the telly? Does it let you reset the HDMI device list? Maybe the 360 is caching the wrong key, or something, and because the telly "knows" it, there's no renegotiation going on?

Um, I don't know how to do reset the HDMI device list. Do you think maybe it's 'bound' itself to my dad's TV?
I didn't make it clear before, but it was quite happy to play DVDs before I went to Bedfordshire.
Wierd.

Maybe. I mean can you reset the telly's HDMI device list, not the 360 - I don't know how to do the latter, either.

My Sony W4000, for example, has a whole "HDMI Setup" section in the menus, with an option to update the list. No idea if that does what I think it does, because it might not and my PS3 might never work again.

I have a Sony Bravia, so maybe it's the same. I'll have a hunt.

Odds on that having
  • fixed it, so Grim...'s watching DVDs and playing 360 like it's the new thang, or
  • caused Grim...'s TV to explode into a shower of pixels, and he's sat in the boot of his Tomcat rocking back and forth, sobbing
?
