Discussing this with my best friend (i.e. my wife) in bed last night. Decided to make a poll.

If they're not, that's a little odd, no?

It means you've been divorced once and are settling for second best.

That's what we thought, too. But there seems to be some people who have a partner who, somehow, isn't a friend. Which confuses me greatly.

I guess she is. I see her more often and spend far more time with her than any other friend, and I feel I can talk or joke about anything.

I'm not sure, though. I'd probably still class another mate as my best friend, as I've known him for over a decade, and we share practically every interest and sense of humour. Even with us living >200 miles apart now, given you never know how long relationships with women are going to last, old friends are always there.

Maybe I should have said "one of your very best friends" or something of that nature.

I'd disagree, unfortunately. Over the last five years I've lost and gained a number of friends, but Ange has been pretty constant (I can't seem to shift her, no matter how hard I try).

I guess I'm just not sentimental when it comes to friendships. They either work with a bit of effort, or you drift apart. I have no problem with cutting people out of my life if they're no good for me, or the effort is all one-way traffic.

'Isn't a friend' and 'isn't your best friend' are two wildly different things, of course. I guess it depends what you define 'best friend' as.

Given the question "would you rather do most things with your partner than anyone else?", I'd answer yes. Given the question "would you rather do absolutely everything with your partner than anyone else?", I'd probably answer no.

I ticked yes, because he is, though when I think about the question it is an odd one.

See, my other half is the absolute closest person to me. Nobody could be closer, I'd put him before anyone else. However, if someone to ask me the name of my best friend, I'd instinctively say Jackie, because I'd assume they weren't asking about my other half but someone who was just a friend, whereas my other half is much more than that.

But yes, of course he is my best friend. I'd imagine if I gave his name as the answer though someone would say 'well, yes, of course, I mean apart from him' as it would be taken as a given.

I chose 'other' because I have a few contendors for best chum, but if I'm absolutely honest, it's swinging the way of girlfriend and best friend. That's not very interesting.

I've lost and gained friend as well, but one seems to have been a constant for a good portion of my life. We don't speak constantly, or see eachother very often, but getting in touch is never awkward in the slightest, like it would be with other friends I rarely see. We've already drifted apart, really, especially in geographical terms, but it doesn't feel like it.

hahah, I saw "Dirty Fan Male" at the Fringe years back. It was about the letters sent to the girls of the soft porn, set to music, with some insights into what was requested to be sent out. It was really, really, good.

'Spouse' is a horrible word. Sounds like a piece of machinery used in a sewerage works.

I think it depends how far into a relationship you are too, it takes time to develop a friendship, and for that new person to then become your best friend feels a little like they are taking the place of your already best friend.

Having typed that, I do agree that there's not much point if they aren't. Hmm, what Meems said. :D

I don't like the term 'best friend', so I voted 'no'.

She's obviously a very good friend of mine, though.
