My first modem was an acoustic coupler. I got it in about 1987, for £10 from Bull Electrical or somewhere. It was a cheap and nasty thing, not a solid bit of kit like that. I used it about twice before deciding it was rather pointless, and graduated to a 1200/75 baud Prestel modem found in a bin and then a 2400 baud Amstrad modem that cost £20, which I continued to use for a couple of years.
