Yes, it's true. My compy has finally kicked the bucket after eight years faithful and diligent service. It all began with that virus that I kept scrubbing. Eventually, I scrubbed too hard and combined with installing Win XP Service Pack 3, completely screwed my computer. Now when it boots it restarts every time it's about to get to the Windows Log In screen. Tried safe mode, last safe mode restore... nuthin'. :'(

I need a new computer. I can't buy one until I get my bond back on July 1st. I don't have a registered XP disc or anything, a mate built the computer. So either I format and buy XP, or resign myself. (And I'm reluctant to buy XP 'cos I want Vista with the new system, for the DX10. I guess I could get Vista and try it on my current one but I only have 2 gigs of ram and a 2500 AMD single processor.)

Hmm...

Anyone got a spare XP disc and code going, that I could purchase for nay so much? :nerd:

Are you not a student? If you are you can get XP free from your uni.

You can always torrent a student version, as it does not need activation.

Yes. The constantly hovering Greek Chorus makes shelving difficult, too.

Check a copy out of the library and tape it?

Actually - you quite often get bootable linux discs on magazine covers and the like, you could probably pick on up today and be back up and running, via the excitingly different linux. (obviously, do install XP again once you get it, as the novelty quickly wears off).

Last time I visited a library the internet access computers were 486s with the floppy drives glued shut.

Not to worry, the inevitable sarky comments made me laugh. All good! :)

Nah, I'll just have to swipe that one of Metal Angel's and then work out how to do my first format & install. No XP discs here in this library, or compy mags apart from PC Format.

Ooh... good job I saved my pics and abortive novels to a USB stick, eh?

There was this story in the paper today http://www.guardian.co.uk/politics/2009 ... le-records And it made me think of that case. In a sort of tangential way.

Quote:
Existing 850,000 profiles on the database of innocent people who have been arrested but not convicted of any offence are to be re-examined by the police over the next two years to see if they have since been convicted of another crime.

If a thread turns into yet another shit pun thread, could you at least mark it so in the thread title.

I am getting really quite annoyed with how many threads go this way, and would like to avoid having to read this crap.

It's almost as though puns should have their own thread, or something.

Apologies Mr Dave, as I started it this time. Fair comment.
In my defence, the question was answered quite satisfactorily by then, so there wasn't much more to be discussed. And you could have stopped reading at that point.

Righto. MetalAngel has hopefully solved my problems, being the wizard chap he is. Anyway, I'm looking forward to the joys of lengthy installations and driver hunting and so on to follow. I'll have to shift my music collection back on there as well. Garn.

It's rarely the first one that I object to, because it's generally clever and follows well. It's the pages after it of people trying their best to ram in some tangentially related pun that just doesn't fit.

Hurrah!

Formatted hard disc, installed XP - it worked! Glee! :D Thanks Steve! Exciting having so much free space to fill, currently only four gigs of seventy six are used. Now I've just got to get wireless working again and download drivers. Also need to rummage Microsoft Word from somewhere, though if anyone has a good freeware word processor suggestion, that'd be nice.

Ooh, does anyone know of a good online thing that converts passwords to ASCII 40bit script? Need it for the WEP, not sure if the old password to my house wireless is working or nay. The entire things borderline impenetrable, to be honest.

Hurrah!

I've done it, I'm back online! Updated sound card and video drivers and all is peachy. Well, almost all - I accidently installed/downloaded Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Naggathon to get to the Service Pack 3 download, and it rubs bitter salt into the wound of me being unable to install Win Media Player 11 due to the copy not being genuine... but never mind! Same as old.

Now to install service pack 3. Should be fun. Gngh.

No idea, though of course I'd have to download it to get it and I couldn't do that without installing XP. My machine ain't terribly fast either, so humble old XP is the best for me, I reckon.

Anyway, installed service pack 3 okay and just been playing TF2. I missed it. Just a shame I'm bunged up with a horrible cold at the moment.
