Bloody gfx card is on the blink again. This time my second monitor still worked, everything just bumped over to that screen. I was trying to get my main monitor back up and running and it seemed to be recognised again in ati control centre, so i selected 'extend my desktop onto this monitor'. What I've ended up wiht is vista in a very verly low res mode indeed, showing only a small area of the screen. I can right click in space but selecting personalise doesn't bring up any menu that I can see, nor does selecting the control centre.
The screen does not scroll with my mouse movements, which I'd have hoped it might. Safe mode gives me a useable if restricted pc... the ati control centre won't load because the drivers aren't running, i don't want to use the drivers, just change a setting.
Any ideas how I might get my pc to boot again in such a way as I can see? I basically need to get it to boot in 1024x768 or 800x600 but other than getting to the options i can't get to, I've no idea how.

Turn off, unplug your second monitor, turn on? That should force a (temporary) defaulting of the settings which you can apply, turn off, plug second monitor back, start up and try not to do it again?

tap f8 during startup for advanced options. One of them is vga mode. Bypasses drivers

Turn off, format, install XP.

And how would this not have happened with XP?
System restore form safe mode worked in the end.

No one has ever been able to determine what the audio bug is on my friend's vista install. For those who haven't read about it, the machine has a probem with media players. Windows media player gives out sound but no other media player will.
