I was hoping to buy Jedi Knight 2 - Jedi Outcast and play it on the 360. I've got a PC version but it's easier to play stuff on the Eggbox in the evenings. But nooooooooooooooooooo. It's not on the list. The cunts.

Is the fairly small list of backwards compatible games going to get longer, ever? And are there sneaky ways of getting "non" compatible games to run on the 360 (without voiding the warranty)?

Or am I going to have to get the Xbox 180 out of the loft?

No and no.

The problem is that the 360 is not inherently compatible with the Xbox1. Each game has to be recompiled and tested. Microsoft announced some time ago that they would not be adding any more BC titles, outside the Xbox Originals program.

Cunts.

They were touting the 360 as being "backwards compatible" and then only showered us with a tokenistic list of NHL and NFL games, then?

Cunts.

Can they please make a third Jedi Knight game to make up for it kthnxbibi.

I've got loads of Xbox 1 games that work on the 360, and there's no compelling reason for me to pick up the old chunky box again.

Considering that the PS3 now doesn't have any BC, I think they've a fairly decent job. I picked up JK2 for the Gamecube recently.

OutRun2006 works just fine on the 360, that's good enough for me ;)

I was disappointed to discover a few games of mine weren't compatible. Buggered if I can remember what they were right now though.

Oh wait, Prince of Persia Sands of Time

I really, really hope the Xbox720 ignores 360 games completely and just pushes forward. I've never put a 180 game into my 360, and can't see that I ever would.

Sands of Time works; I was playing it recently (it upscales quite beautifully into 720p too). The two sequels don't, though.

I really, really hope that all XBLAH games work on the 720. I see no reason why they shouldn't, they are written to a pretty tight API.

Whereas I have probably the same number of Xbox games as 360, and play them a fair bit. One thing that Nintendo have bang on is their BC support. It'll be one of the main reasons I pick up a Wii eventually (when my GC finally conks out).

Everything Microsoft has ever done has been buggered by the commitment to backwards compatibility - whether it's consoles, 16/32 bit subsystems on PCs, OS support. They should really take a leaf out of Apple's book and draw a line in the sand.

There's no Xbox 1 game I'm interested in that doesn't run on the 360 that I can't pick up for the GC or PS2. I think that's pretty win-worthy.

I wouldn't be at all bothered about BC if they hadn't promised it in the first place. It looks like sony have fucked it off now.

Commodore may have survived if they'd skipped the a1200 and released a proper 32-bit machine, BC be damned!

They've not bloody done it this time though, have they? They've just produced shitty emulators for 200-odd 180 games, that don't even all work properly.

I'm not sure that's the reason they didn't.

The A1200 was always going to use a 68k processor, so that aspect of it was "free". A lot of the rest of the architecture didn't really need to change (at the time), the main upgrade needed was the graphics. They retained OCS/ECS and added a new architecture too - AGA.

Unfortunately, AGA was somewhat lacking due to time or cost constraints - there was apparently something called "AAA" in the works which would have been a radical improvement.

There *was* a lot of moaning at the time that the A1200 wasn't backwards compatible with many games. C= didn't try to smooth the path for that at all - if the games were system friendly they'd run, if not they wouldn't.

you know what I wanted a while back? An Amiga on a card. Whe I was into emulation and Amigas, I was frustrated that it was difficult, buggy and slow to run amiga games on a PC.

I figured at the time it would've been possible to fit most of the Amiga chipset onto a PCI card and provide an amiga floppy drive. I reckon if someone had launched a A1200 version with decent frontend stuff in say 1999, they would've made a killing

They've done significantly more than their main competitor.

Anyway - you're complaining because you want to buy a game that you already own, to play it on a console that doesn't support it rather than the console that does support it that you already own. Stop wingeing, man.

Just looking at console exclusives for a minute:

Brute Force
Counter-Strike
Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge
Fable: The Lost Chapters
Forza Motorsport
Halo: Combat Evolved
Halo 2
Jade Empire
Jet Set Radio Future
Links 2004
The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind
Ninja Gaiden
Outrun 2
Project Gotham Racing
Project Gotham Racing 2
Serious Sam
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords
Star Wars: Republic Commando
Stubbs the Zombie in "Rebel Without a Pulse"
Unreal Championship 2: The Liandri Conflict

Ok, not all great games, but what's left, really? Everything else you can either play on a GC or PS2 (that you can pick up for peanuts these days, and play a load of different platform exclusives). The wiki page is quite inaccurate with the list of issues for each game, as I've had almost no problems with the PAL versions.

Yeah, someone actually did that!

A bit more than just a games-playing card though, and possibly too expensive to have been successful by that time. I'd have probably got one though..

But still nothing that's "buggered" the 360 though, was my point.

@kalmar

I would've chewed my arm off in 99/2000 for one of those.

In the end I bought an a1200 and spent weeks trying to get a null-modem cable to work. I eventually gave up.

Microsoft never promised full BC for the 360. They said it would work with "Many of the top selling xbox 1 titles".

And it does.

Indeed, and I've not said anything different. I'm just annoyed that their list is (a) fairly short and (b) full of shit games, and doesn't include the 1 game that I've actually wanted to play BC-style. And that their "BC" solution (if you believe the wiki page) leaves most of the games touted as being BC playing very buggily. Which isn't "working with" to my mind.

FFS, did you even read my post? I've tested all but seven of those games on my list and had no problems. Wiki's page refers to the NTSC pages mainly, and most of them are very minor bugs, anyway.

Why do you want to play a multi-format game that doesn't run on the 360 when you already own an Xbox in the first place? I conclude: you are a berk.

Not from my reading of it. the PAL version of Mercs appears to be unplayably borked, for instance.

Because I don't have space for three consoles under the television, you porchmonkey.

Excellent - I can dig that out of the chest then. Have you played it all the way through? As there's allegedly a problem with the north half of the map which makes the 360 freeze, apparently.

Heh. I could probably do that myself, seeing as it's about 3 feet away from the 360 in a big chest of dvds and games.

I think it's utterly fabulously glorious with one or two minor bugs that don't spoil anything.

I used to think like that. Now I'm enjoying playing games for fun again. I wouldn't have touched GC Resident Evil if I was still points boosting.

None of the games I own seem to work on the 360. Chronicles of Riddick and Jet Set Radio Future being two main ones. Well actually they're the ones I want to play and they don't work.

JSRF works fine. I own it. I can totally understand why Riddick doesn't work: it was released towards the end of the Xbox's lifespan and really did push the hardware to its limits. I don't think an emulator would be able to run it properly.

Do you own JSRF, or the JSRF/Sega GT pack as I think that one has a problem.
Also, I gave up on backwards compatibility because I use a vga cable, and that leads to all sorts of 50/60hz issues.
