We did say when we moved the sport threads into the main forum that we would see how it went for a couple of weeks, and then have another vote. So, off you go - and feel free to use this thread for discussion.

Anything special could always be stickied for its duration anyway.

I like it better out in the main area, as the football topic is always floating about on the first page, and not in the sub forum which I overlooked most of the time.

I don't see how it was hurting anything.. I mean sure, it wasn't going to break records for being busy but hey it wasn't hurting anything.

In that case, we should have a PC gaming sub-forum. It wouldn't be very busy, but it wouldn't hurt anyone.

Again, we've got an "I'm not bothered" vote. This serves no purpose whatsoever and just buggers the results up. Force people to say yes or no, or they just don't have to vote. Then we'll know for sure.

How does it bugger the results up if they are apathetic about the results? The 'not bothered' total is going to be dumped, obv, so there's no difference between people that don't vote and people that vote 'not bothered' so they can see the results.

I wasn't. I was just using it as an example as to the complete banal irrelevancy of what he was saying.

How is it any more irrelevant than (say) the three posts that preceded it?

People who voted 'not bothered' may have voted for or against if they were the only options. Obviously some would've abstained, but I think we'd get more accurate results. There isn't a 'not bothered' option in a general election. Well, unless you count the Lib Dems or something.

edit: For the record, I'm not bothered, but I voted to have it back where it was because I marginally prefer it that way.

He was posting on topic in thread which asked his opinion on it, I would say that is pretty relevant.

The 'it wasn't busy, but so what?' argument. I'm not saying it was an irrelevant point in general, but with regards to the vote.

You can't see the results of a general election until it's over, though.

I voted to put them back in a sub forum.

I initially voted to bring them out I think, but now I've realised I don't have enough interest in sports to warrant reading the threads a lot of the time.

It's bizarre that we chose only sport as a subject to segregate, as opposed to games for example (or non-games, if you see this as a primarily gaming forum).

I guess sport is the only subject that people really care one way or the other about segregating.

Yup, I agree. To me, it seems logical that we either have one forum, or half a dozen (say, games, blog stuff, TV/Films/etc, sport, current affairs, other). We probably don't have the post volume to justify half a dozen, so one makes most sense, at least for now.

I think that you could make the case for sport being a special case. It is divisive, as are many other topics, however there aren't as many topics about say, pets, for them to become an annoyance to anyone who doesn't care. The reason that the sport was singled out was that some people thought there were rather too many sport threads at one point. You could say the same about films but I seriously doubt there are many people on here who have absolutely no interest in any films, or any music.

It doesn't bother me particularly but I actually quite liked them being together as there are a few sports I actually do like such as F1 and snooker so it was good to be able to catch up on those threads without the mither of searching for them, no biggie though really.

Yes, but this was back at WoS, remember, and actually started as a subforum for Goal Club, and kept for football because the search was so damned bad.

Yeah, I like the fact that I can get the sports ones quickly, as they are dip in, dip out. and lot's of people dip in and out of all of the sports threads.

Most threads over a certain age do not reappear (some do obviously) but I imagine the sports ones do more than most. that to me made them being in a sub forum useful.

Consider this: NFL thread lasted the entire season, only got to three pages, but everyone who went in there was knowledgable and had interesting points to make... and its the only NFL thread I've ever seen on a british based forum that didn't have some tosser wander in and say 'the big jessies! look at all the armour they wear! And they have a rest every ten seconds!"

Would any of these things happened if it was on the main forum?

Here's my projected timeline:

Thread opens with a post.

Some tosser replies with "the big jessies! look at all the armour they wear! And they have a rest every ten seconds!"

Thread is never heard of again.

Folks, the only people in this thread who've actually commented seem to be in favour of the subforum, yet the voting majority is still in favour of keeping them in the main forum. This seems odd, so can we have some opinions from those who think it should stay in the main forum? Ta.

That's because of 'vocal minority' syndrome, though. I've already said a hundred times why I think it should be in the main forum; sport encompasses everything from Formula One to basketball to tennis. It'd be akin to having a sub-forum for 'media', in which you talk about games, TV, films, DVDs, books, magazines, newspapers etc. All such different topics with different fans. I like football and F1, but have no interest in rugby or baseball. Why should they all be lumped into one category in the same way that the Daily Mail and Shakespeare's sonnets would be in the fictitious 'media' sub-forum would be?

Personally, I think the football thread has become a lot livelier and full of discussion from people who would otherwise not contribute. Yes, it's wandered off-topic every now and again, but which threads don't? I finally don't feel like a leper for wanting to let people know that AFC Bournemouth have moved ever closer to staying in the Football League. If people don't want to read about nonsense like that, they don't have to click on the thread.

If this place was a lot busier, we'd have a case for segregating a lot of different subjects, just so they didn't disappear off the front page extremely quickly, but until we have to cross that bridge (if ever), they should all stay here. I am one person who'll be ecstatic if the sports threads stay in the main forum.

This vote is fundamentally broken. It's insane that there is a third "don't care" option as it distorts the results.

Would you like me to chop your arm off? Yes, no or don't care? Ridiculous!

I also expect that if you removed the votes of the people who never actually talk sport, the vote would be even closer.

Sadly it looks like we're stuck with the sport in the main forum which means more wibble and less actual sport.

For those who think that this kind of tinkering will improve the forum, you are wrong. The problems run far deeper than a simple re-organisation I'm afraid. There's quite alot of men overboard but still the band plays on totally oblivious........

I quite like the sports threads being in the main forum, I like to read the footy thread from time to time but forget about it when it's up there.

Ok. It should stay in the main forum.

If the place got busier and busier, then sub-forums would probably be needed but for now, it's fine as it is. As for the 'don't care' option, that's already been explained - if you want to see the votes without actually voting either way, you just choose that.

The reason the 'don't care' option is there is to avoid the status quo effect. People who don't give a damn, if forced to choose, will in 90% of cases choose to leave it the way it is.

FYI, I'm going to leave it to run until close of play Wednesday now, as I neglected to allow revoting before.

I like the threads in the main forum, because it reminds me they exist. "More wibble" is hardly the end of the world, it's not like there's enough traffic to drown threads in off-topicness to the point that on-topic conversations can't be had.

I voted "Don't care", as I don't care. I'll post in the sports threads whether they're in a sub-forum or not. As such, I will let any decision be taken by those who have a preference, as I'm fine either way.

I like it being in the main forum, as otherwise I forget it exists.
